This is likely the reason they waited to release the robbery video.

Johnson was giving his account of what happened to every reporter who would listen, but had avoided giving it to the police until a day or so ago. Once they had him on record, having signed his witness statement (if in fact he told them the same story he had previously told everyone else), the time was right to release the video, which clearly shows Johnson's presence in the store, thus invalidating his eyewitness account of how the entire confrontation unfolded.
