We've never used beef melt, always chicken quarters. Beef melt is for set netting...

Somebody said they do.
We did before we knew better.

Yea. I always hated dealing with that chit as a kid when set netting. As long as it was frozen it was fine. But once that chit started to thaw

I use a 12/0 hook and braided line. Can go to a 14/0 hook if you want. I order all my stuff from the Fish Net co in Jonesville since I order a lot ( I catch about 75 or so gators a year). I put a piece of chicken and beef melt on each line. Hang as high as you want. A big alligator can jump out the water really high. I'm usually about 2 1/2 feet over the water though just trying to fill tags. If you call the fish net company they will tell you what most people order ( 12/0 hooks and twine). The biggest advise I can give you is use plenty of line (about 30 ft). If the alligator can't get under the water once hooked a lot of the time they get up on the bank and that's when they straighten the hook. Good luck. Oh. Elm Hall is by Verret? If so Should have plenty of trees to hang lines from but if you can get a couple poles that's helps when you see a spot without a good tree.
Thanks. Are you using the paracord braid or the tarred braid, and what pound test? Are any brand hooks better than another? This is probably a 1 time thing for me so I dont want to lose some monster gator because I could have used a better hook or line.

We used 1000lb test I think. It's been a while. I guess it was about 1/8 thick.
Just make sure you tie it good. You shouldn't loose any.

I actually use a 900 lb test nylon braid- white color. Kinda looks like pull rope. I like it because it's easier on my hands than twine and use the cut pieces for all kinda other uses after the season. Some of the twines are way thinner but actually have higher test strength. I have never had one break the line but have had 4 or 5 straighten the hook ( mostly after they got on the bank). If I was u I would get so
me 14/0 hooks and whatever line you wanted to use. I have seem some really big alligators caught on what appears to be rediculously thin line.

You need a good bit of diameter so you can hold on to it without it cutting into your hand. Also makes it easier to untangle off cypress knees and shite.
We used mustad hooks and I don't recall ever having one straighten out. They're expensive.

No they're regular ol looking hooks, just big.
I'm not sure what size they are. I guess the opening (tip to shank) was about 2ish inches maybe???????
I don't think circle hooks would work well.

Did some asking around and it looks like Bacons Tackle in Shreveport is where everyone has gotten their stuff in the past.
Nascar, the straight hook is for the line and the treble is the one you throw?
