I had one in early 90's when I was at LSU. I had to have back surgery for ruptured disc and a week later, I woke up and my entire left leg was blown up and purple. Luckily I was staying at my parent's house in Texas, and had the surgery at Baylor medical in Houston. They rushed me back and found I had blood clot in my left leg. The worst was when they tried to shoot dye into my legs to see for sure where the clot was, they had to try and do this by putting an IV into the bottom of my foot, they tried 5 times but couldn't get it because my foot was so swollen, most painful thing ever.
I spent 10 days in the hospital in the bed, and couldn't get up. I threw one clot to my lung, and had to do breathing exercises. I basically had to learn to walk with a walker before they would let me leave the hospital, mainly due to the leg and also since I was still recovering from back surgery.
Never really knew how close I was to death until few years later.
I luckily haven't had any issues since then. You need to be careful and I'd go see another doctor.
