An older version or something? Or at least at a discounted price

Look for a large inland water way. But be careful it's full of pirates. Then after you do meet up with the pirates and get what you need, be sure to get yourself checked for viruses.
Also, you only need to get the key from the pirate. The treasure is free without the key from Microsoft.

Office 365 (Word, PPT, Access, Excel, OneNote) for 1 computer is $6.99/month or $9.99/month for 5 computers... Connect it to the cloud and you're never out of reach of ALL your work if you have an internet connection.
If you have an .edu it's even cheaper. I think it's $79 for 2 or 3 computers for 4 (3?) years.

Lucky... It's not that bad of a deal either way. $20 bucks a year for the full suite. Getting good use out of PPT, Word, Excel, and OneNote on almost a daily basis.

Why do you need Microsoft Office? There are plenty of legally free Office programs out there. If all you actually need is a word processor and spread sheet and you aren't willing to pay for it, either use Google's Office apps, or LibreOffice or OpenOffice
If you have a recent iPhone/iPad/Mac, Apple even gives away it's office software for free and you can log into icloud.com to access a web version of the apps. If you actually NEED Microsoft office, like needing to send documents back and forth to a client that can't suffer from any format translation glitches, then you probably can afford to pay for it. If you can't afford to pay for it, then one of the many free options should be just fine.

I got office 2013 pro for $10 through the home use program. Google it. You may be elegible and not even know it.
Best $10 I've ever spent.

I have an Outlook.com account. From there I can create Word/Excel/PowerPoint/OneNote files and they are all stored in the cloud on One Drive. From there you can download the files or share them. I've never paid for any of these services. I'm assuming some capabilities must be limited, but I haven't run into any issues.
