Just ran over neighborhood kids' dog (OP UPDATE)

These kids come over to me and my SO's place all the time. Playing in our yard, drinking our gatorade, eating our food, etc.
Good relationship and all. They love us. Maybe not for long.
Anyway, driving back from errands and we were waving to the kids. There were like 5 of them in their yard. Dog dashes out from bush on other side (someone else's yard) apparently. Never saw the dog and we just hear "kalump kalump".
Stop the car. Dog is dead. Kids are crying. Other father comes out. We place the dog in a garbage bag.
What steps should I take to help them? I was thinking about pet bevereavement cards along with a gift cards?
It's a shitty, shitty day.
******UPDATE*******
Spoke to the kids' mother yesterday. They are getting a new dog this weekend when the kids return from Kansas City. Kids are holding up okay. The little one said "he is resting in peace" and "he's up in heaven" and that "accidents happen". They buried the dog in the backyard and are gettting a tombstone.
I offered to pay for a new dog and the tombstone. My offers were in vain.
Good enough for me. Still I killed a dumb dog though....

Holy shite man that's terrible

Bang his wife. Might as well go ahead and finish the job ruining the kids lives.

Not really your fault, but that is such a terrible feeling

Let them all have a go at your wife
That'll sooth the pain

Ask the father what you can do to help here -- it's gonna be a pretty sensitive time for the kids obviously, and the wrong gesture (which is difficult to predict) would make things much worse than not doing anything. Let him handle it and just try to help where you can and stay out of the way otherwise

Get them a new puppy if it is okay with the parents.
And it's fresh?
Invite them over for Chinese.

Buy them a gift. Maybe a movie to take their minds off of it. Maybe something like Marley & me?

Man I'm sorry to hear that. Toug situation.
I would ask them what you can do. Offer to buy them a new puppy (to the parents) of their choice and present it to the kids.

You could start by taking their dog out of a garbage bag. What's wrong with you?
