I've never had to deal with the switch on the ground but done it in the air twice. Both times switching from west arrival to east when we were coming from the northeast and already on the west side of ATL.

Still not as bad as flying into ORD. Last three times I have arrived we 1) got 20 minutes worth of delay vectors over northern Michigan (DTW-ORD), sat in the penalty box after landing because of ramp congestion (about 30 minutes) and got put into a circle over Wisconsin because of congestion.
Thankfully ORD was my terminus each time but if I was connecting I would have been screwed, oh and UA just announced on their earnings call that they are re-banking ORD in the Spring for better directional flows and shorter connection times.
