The nuclear option became acceptable when Republicans convened at the beginning of Obama's presidency and decided to block anything he tried to do, no matter what, even regardless of their own previous positions on matters, the country be damned.

At that moment the actual qualifications of a Federal justice nominee no longer mattered to Republicans, only that he or she were nominated by the President. Obstruction of Federal justice appointments thus began at an unprecedented rate, justice in courts was backlogged all across the country, and Reid, as a mere PRACTICAL matter, had to put a stop to it.
