a few questions about the Palestine/Israel situation

When did the palestinians move to the gaza strip, in 1949 when israel was created or sometime after?
Were they coerced to move there or was it by free choice that they separated from israel?
Did israel only gain control of gaza during the war with egypt/jordan in the 60's (70's maybe)?
Make fun of me all you want, I'll be the first to admit I am very poorly informed on the entire situation.

Israel was created in 1948 and a war was immediately fought. As a result, many of the Palestinians fled to the West Bank (controlled by Jordan) and Gaza (controlled by Egypt.) In 1967, Arab nations attacked Israel and lost in six days. As a result, Israel gained control of Gaza and the West Bank.

Well, first off the term "Palestinian People" first came into use in the 1964 PLO charter. The term actually refers to Arabs who live in a certain area of the world. Palestine is a geographic territory not a race. In about 1,000 BC the territory of Palestine was actually a lot larger than just Israel and covered parts of modern day Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and I think Saudi Arabia.

The people I think you are referring to fled to those areas to avoid the fighting in the war in 1948.

Gaza was originally controlled by Egypt (1958-67) and then by Israel (1967-94) Israel granted self control after 1994.
The real mess is the "Palestinians" are out casts from everywhere in the region and Israel is the only country (Gaza is part of Israel) that allows them any type of autonomy. They are a people that are MOSTLY Muslim (though about 1% are Christian) and for the most part just want to live life.
There is no good end for Palestinians as long as the continue to be used as pawns by organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood (who are now in control) and the PLO.

Here's an interesting video I stumbled across of a debate between two of the most respected Jewish authorities on the subject of Israel/Palestine. One is left-wing Norman Finkelstien who lost all four of his grandparents in concentration camps, and the other is right-wing Likudnik Benny Morris who is perhaps the most respected historian on the facts surrounding the creation of Israel.
