re: Why do people on this board think they know better than the coaching staff?

The 2011 season at qb shows that coaches arent always right

quote:the problem is fans don't know what's going on behind closed doors. starting the most talented player is not always the best thing for the organization. good coaches understand this and protect the long term health of the organization. from the fan perspective, the coaches are stupid because anybody can see that x player is better than y. it's oversimplification.
Saints fans though Junior should start over Will Smith
a good example is perrilloux. now, jr vs smith might have been something to a lesser degree than rp but, the principle could be the same. fans don't see the personal dynamics or injuries throughout the week. they just see the game and some interviews but continue to think the coaches are ignorant.

Just because information may be asymmetrical doesn't mean the coach is always right. More information still doesn't guarantee an optimal decision. That's what people bringing up this tired bullshite all the time don't understand.

Ok this has been said many times but what do you think the coaches could have done better? Two mediocre-at-best QBs. Should they have played Mett or something?

Younsee it live all the time when coaches make boneheaded decisions in crunch time, like ours

There is no reason lee shouldnt have been starting after the 1st bama game. There is also no reason lee shouldnt have gotten a shot in january. Everyone knew it except the most important guy.

Actually, according to the Tigerdroppings corollary, since a Coach made that decision we can infer four things
1) It was unabashedly the correct decision because;
2) The coach knows the most;
3) The decision is above reproach unless you are a coach of equal or greater stature; and
4) No other insight would have been helpful in reaching that decision.

quote:this is usually only accidental. look up gettier counterexamples. fans guess at things constantly and sometimes they end up right but that knowledge is in no way jtb. then the fan thinks he knows more than the coach.
A fan's hindsight sometimes is smarter than a coach's initial decision.

blindly?
Welter was a liability last year. Now, the dline didn't do him many favors, but his backup was outperforming him.
I had absolutely no problem with Miles playing Jefferson over Lee in the Bama game. Hell, I didn't mind Jefferson being the starting QB after. I think JJ got far too much hate beginning in 2009.
What I did mind is that JLee was pulled after a bad half against Bama, yet Jefferson had 2 terrible games in a row without getting pulled. We couldn't cross the 50, try something different.

Because sometimes the fans are right? Good example: Rashard Robinson over Jalen Mills at CB last year.
Sometimes it seems the coaches wait too long to make the change, and by that point can't do much with the season.

This is a message board for discussing opinions about sports. I don't really understand why you are so butthurt about people wanting to see a different player if they aren't satisfied with another player's performance.
I will concede that the logic typically used to reach some of these opinions is often incredibly flawed. Therefore if you see someone making a ridiculous statement it is your opportunity to belittle them and use facts to prove them wrong.

Assuming Coaches always know best in something that you admit is fricking hard is stupid. That's why people know. Anyone can have insight. Read Bill Barnwell's thank you for not coaching columns. He's never coached anyone. He knows a lot better than almost all coaches the quantifiably correct call in situations that coaches routinely botch.
coaches actually consider all these factors. that's why teams have an entire staff-just to try to grasp all of that. just because a fan guesses right doesn't mean he has any inkling of what's going on compared to the coaches. again, it's gross oversimplification.

Rohan Davey and Josh Booty comes to mind.
PP7 as a punt returner comes to mind.

Asymmetrical information, difficulty of the problem, and number of variables doesn't mean that the coach is always right and always knows more. We've already covered this ground. Optimal decisions can be made, get this, without considering all or even any information.

Really dude. u cant be this ignorant. Why doesnt Bill trade in the journalism gig for the much higher paying coaching gig, since he's so freaking intelligent.
