Honestly, if Rex has an issue with the lead in to Iraq and how we went to war back then, then he should have real issues with this. This is crazy. It makes absolutely no sense.
Posted on 6/26/14 at 10:54 pm to Wolfhound45
Nope, no sense at all. There is clear historical evidence that points to how it can backfire. Rinse and repeat.

FIFY
We are throwing ourselves into the middle of a sectarian conflict in which we gain nothing through the outcome. Absolutely nothing. Maddening.

Will one of my liberal brethren please (please) explain what we are attempting to achieve by spending $500 million dollars to arm and train "vetted" opposition groups in Syria. Please?
Rex? Vegas Bengal? Decatur? Anyone?
I hate to generalize about groups but from what I have read seems the very left wing of the Democratic party does not support this. I'm assuming some "middle of the road " Dems do. Frankly from visiting other sites I think a lot of Democrats question this policy.

You're just an obstructionist.

$500 Million to arm ISIS.
Not a penny for the IRS investigation. Just crying of wasting tax payer money.
It is crystal mother f*cking clear which is the waste of funding.

Which ones? The ones who are causing us to evacuate operations in Iraq or the ones that don't exist?

Thanks for an honest answer. Truly appreciate it.
The meme (for better or worse) from my brethren on the Left side of the aisle is that the Right is the party of war. Well, I have to admit, you are trying to take the title away from us (rhetorically speaking).
This is absolute madness.

Finally, a liberal when you need one.
What is your understanding of this situation? What are we trying to accomplish in this initiative?
Obama requests $500M for Syria opposition

A simple read of the newspaper or any foreign policy analysis will show that the Free Syrian Army is not only different than ISIL, but they have also been fighting them and the Assad regime at the same time.

If my assumption is correct then the peaceful Muslims are not involved in the fighting in Syria or Iraq. So, we are either going to equip non-fighters or we are going to equip radicals. Either way those weapons end in the hands of our enemy.

In the future, before we decide to arm any group, I would like our officials to answer this question. Would we arm and train this group if they were trying to implement their cause here in the US?

From an AP article.
quote:
President Barack Obama is asking Congress for $500 million to train and arm vetted members of the Syrian opposition, as the U.S. grapples for a way to stem a civil war that has also fueled the Al Qaeda inspired insurgency in neighboring Iraq.

Seems to jive with the OP to me.

Do I have to explain right now why supporting moderate elements in the Syrian conflict are in the US interest? I'm getting ready for work right now but I'm sure you can find some literature on it on the net.
If I don't go out of town this weekend, I'll try to get back to you.

That is not what the initiative says. It says "vetted" groups. Who are these groups? You are assuming that it is the FSA. I think a quick perusal of Syrian opposition will show you the opposition itself is a very complex situation.
This conflict is drawing itself (roughly) along Ba'athist/Shia and Sunni lines. A sectarian war across (at least) two countries (it is not self contained in Syria - it is manifesting itself in Iraq as well).
This is something I do not want to get involved in.

Here you can find information of the theater of war. This map is both Iraq and Syria. The green is the Free Syrian army, the gray is ISIL, and the Kurds are yellow, and so forth.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate your forebearance (truly). However, I find it amusing that we consider anyone a moderate in that conflict. Nor do I see what "dog" we have in that fight. However, I would appreciate anything that you would post.
Thanks again.
