Red Heeler Pups

A friend's dad has a litter and he is giving them away for free. Should I get one?? I'm not a very experienced dog owner(had several goldens growing up) but I do have a large fenced in back yard. This will be an outside dog primarily and it would be my first dog on my own. Any downsides to the breed that I need to be made aware of?? Unfortunately I don't have any pics.

They herd any and everything. Smart dogs. Wouldn't mind having one myself.

No matter what anyone says, your fence cannot contain a heeler.

Even a 6 ft privacy fence?? Do they dig??

6ft fence is good enough. And I have owned two heelers in the past and none of them have dug.

They're kinda like cats.
Their desire to catch and kill snakes, coons, turtles, birds, skunks, cats, and other critters far outweighs your ability to contain them.
That being said, they truly are awesome. Electrical shock and any other pain does not deter their determination.

Great breed. Very active though. Smart and easy to train. Mine has been great with kids all of her life. She would dig areas to lay in under bushes in summer but never tried to dig out or leave the house. Heidi is 16 now and not sure how much longer we will have her but she is still active and affectionate. Get one.

If they are pure bred then free is a hell of a deal. A friend sell their pups for 50 I think.

I personally don't like them. I've been around a few that would bite.

My friend didn't like clapping. He would go nuts running around and barking when you clapped your hands.

in my experience, the heelers are damn smart dogs and are good with family...however, I have seen a lot of them get very territorial and aggressive towards strangers...
