Do photon torpedoes serve any function that phasers don't?

Knowledgeable Star Trek fans, help he out here. Seems like Phasers can do anything a photon torpedeo can do, and maybe even do it better. What am I missing.
Ad while we're at it - what weapon arrays have the upper hand - Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica?

One cuts, the other booms

I always thought, perhaps mistakenly, that phasers were best used for depleting a ships shields but would have a vastly decreased effect on the hull, and vice versa for photon torpedoes.

Couldn't use phasers in Star Trek The Motion Picture when they were caught in the wormhole due to the new engineering that had the phasers tied into the warp drive, so they had to use a photon torpedo. Hence the discussion that ensued between Kirk and Decker.

Why were the shields so crappy? They were the equivalent to Capt America's shield made out of cardboard.

phasers are a discharge of pure energy. Photon torpedoes are small bombs.

Photon torpedoes were warp-capable tactical matter/antimatter weapons commonly deployed aboard starships and starbases by various organizations. Photon torpedoes, often abbreviated as "photons"
quote:
Phasers were the most common and standard directed energy weapon in the arsenal of Starfleet and several other powers. Most phasers were classified as particle weapons and fire nadion particle beams, (Star Trek: First Contact; TNG: "The Mind's Eye"; VOY: "Time and Again", "Demon") but some like the Ferengi hand phaser were classified as plasma weapons and fired forced plasma beams. (TNG: "Descent") Based on the intensity and field of the beam and a variety of adjustments, a wide variety of effects could be achieved.

This kinda makes the most sense (to me anyway). But it sure seems like they blow stuff up with the phasers fairly often.

Strictly comparing weapon arrays, the death star's primary weapon is awfully formidable.

And horribly slow and easily out maneuvered.

The big, simple difference between phasers and photon torpedoes is that the torpedoes pack more of a punch and there's a limited number of them on a ship.
Photon torpedoes are the ship's "heavy weapon."
But you can blow shite up with either. A ship's phaser array is nothing to laugh at in the Star Trek universe.

What get me is, photon torpedoes are said to have a 1.5kg anti-matter/matter warhead, which is enough for an enormously large explosion. Yet, on the tv shows and movies it looks like a couple of Molotov cocktails impacting the ship.

Phasers require more energy - photons (and quantums) can do more against shielding, can be modified, pack a bigger punch - although not as accurate.

Makes sense.

Also helps to shoot a spread of torpedoes at multiple targets. Phasers were fast, but localized to one target at a time

Good point - spreads are also effective against a single target - gives them fewer options for evasion or counter measures.

Depends on the number and type of arrays - I think the Galaxies and Sovereigns can fire on multiples targets with their numerous arrays and targeting system. It does spread out your firepower, though, vice concentrating on 1 target at a time.

I was trying to remember if the D could fire multiple, but I was thinking it always did the charge up and fire of a single beam.
Looks like TOS allowed for multiple shots
But yeah, phasers are all about pin point accuracy

I'm sure if we found images from Wolf 359 we'd see dual shots, or anything from the Dominion war, but the Defiant doesn't count

The Cylon heavy ships(Basestars weren't they?)would have been mauled by Federation Starships and the attack ships would have been gnats against a starship's shields.
