I have no idea why these people want to embarrass themselves by sharing their story.

“All three kids were in college all at the same time and we didn’t have cash saved up,” Shippen says. “We had to finance everything.”
SInce each of their three kids decided to attend private universities, their financing options were limited.

With all three kids attending private universities, their collective student debt bill quickly grew to more than $500,000.
quote:
When Peter lost his job briefly a few years ago, they came close to losing their home and refinanced their mortgage in December to help pay for their eldest daughter's wedding.
“It has just killed us,” Shippen says. “We have no retirement savings. We’re on a 25-year repayment plan and still paying $1,700 a month. It’s like having another mortgage payment.”

Yeah, by the standards of the board, I'm somewhat of a bleeding heart but come on already!

What are the schools and what are the kids' majors?
Why doesn't the article say?

Unless I worked my arse off to find a scholarship, (I did) there was no way my parents could afford to send me to a private University nor would I want them to break their future to do so.

and the kids will want to be bloggers, or join the Peace Corps, or just be bums(which they are already imo)

One of them is an "music therapist."

shite, I missed this.
quote:
Her youngest daughter, Channing, graduated with a degree in music therapy from a private university in 2013 and now works as a music therapist at a nonprofit helping the elderly. She earns about $34,000 a year and owes five times that much in student loans, the bulk of which is in her mother’s name.

Big mistake.
Cat therapy is where the money is to be made.

If someone wants to be a music therapist, good for them. But why would you need an expensive degree for that field? I found her Linkedin and she went to Berklee College of Music. 30K+ in annual tuiton.

Who lets their parents take out another mortgage so they can help pay for a wedding when they are already in so much debt??
Posted on 5/23/14 at 5:10 pm to diddydirtyAubie
Love the title of the article, it's more than student loan debt that killed their finances. Already that much in the hole and refinanced to pay for a wedding? Private school for music therapy degree to work at a non-profit?
Before I decided what to study I thought I wanted to goto a similar school and my parents said that was fine as long as I paid for it. That made that decision real fast and is one of best things that happened to me. I still thank them for that haha.
