But to not believe he actually existed is just stupid
It's a belief shared by many people a lot smarter than yourself, myself included.

but there's plenty of evidence of a man who lived a life resembling the one we've been taught in existence.
No, there isn't, and that's the whole point.

And as new and better data came in that challenged those beliefs, they changed their minds. Guess where that new data came from? OTHER SCIENTISTS! See...that's the difference between science and your worldview. It can be changed with new data that refutes the old notions. We're still new at this...we're learning and growing. It's not perfect, but it's sure as shite better than looking to the sky and hoping for answers.
So if an entire generation from cradle to grave lived in a time where this science that has recently been proven wrong existed, how was this false science beneficial to them? How was their science a," candle in the dark" to them? And how do we know that the science we now live under as fact won't prove equally false in time?

Yet scientists are quick to assert that the current conclusions are totally correct. Scientists do tend to have this god like opinion of themselves.
No, this is what religions and dogmas do. The scientific field holds to what the evidence says at a given moment. It molds ideas around evidence, not evidence to fit ideas.

So the doctors prescribing these meds aren't part of science?

Someone, islam, hindu, or christian (even atheists) is wrong. Not all of them can be true. And that is a whole lotta misbelief
But you stated religion just isn't true...as if you know. I find that odd

Which one is true? They can't ALL be true, now can they?

I respectfully disagree.
Even Hitch acknowledged there was probably some 'mad Rabbi' that the story was based on.

Which leads us back nicely to critical thinking...

That Jesus never existed? That's a far stretch right there. I can understand people who don't think He is God, but never existed? I'm really finding that hard to believe. There's way too much eye witness testimony of his existence to think He didn't at least walk the earth.
It's even more of a stretch to think you're smarter than anyone.

You yourself believe roughly 5 billion humans have it wrong regarding religion. Either one of the exclusive religions is right or none are, either way a whole lot if people place their belief in false ideas with no evidence.

Hitchens wasn't much of an historian. Better you should read people like Robert Price and Richard Carrier.

And even more that are smarter than you...including myself...believe he did.
Do you believe Socrates and Plato existed?

Correct, science is not dictated by the thoughts and actions of people. Doctors over diagnosing ADHD are both going against science and diagnostic criteria.

there really isn't much evidence of this. I happen to believe Jesus probably existed, but they didn't have great record keeping back then.
and choctaw, there is little doubt that plato existed. he wrote quite a few books, that were interconnected.

I believe there is a God...I don't know there is a God. Which is why athiests are annoying as frick...because the talk down to those that believe as if they know.

Many people.
Look...if this all revolves around AGW then fine I'll play. I've avoided this topic because I think it's too long to get into but fine.
Whether it seems like it or not now, I actually have a VERY conservative background. I've voted for precisely one democrat my whole life and that was Edwards over Duke. I listened to Rush for years and years daily, and even listed to G. Gordon while he was on here. I was a fan. I thought that way. I agreed.
Having Al Gore be the face of the global warming issue was a BAD IDEA! I have no idea who thought that was smart. You can't have a political hack, from either side, run out and start declaring scientific truths without having the half of the country that hates them automatically disagree without even listening. The same would have been true had Dan Quayle done the same thing 8 years before.
So...at my core I question how much effect humans are having on the climate. I don't question the fact that the does seem to be changes taking place at speeds never seen before during human lives. And I'll admit, I think my biggest hold out on getting on board fully with just how much effect humans are having on the climate is STILL my dislike of Al Gore and the fact that he jumped out in front of this AND profited like a madman on policies he was supporting. At the same time, when the same groups that want to teach Intelligent Design in public school are adding Climate change to language in their complaints, it's clear there is more going on here than science.
It's a shame we can't just rely on the science in this case. Al Gore politicized it so much, and then the right volleyed and now it's a cluster with the science taking a back seat.

I think most atheists would admit there is a possibility that god exists. I certainly do.
I have met only a handful of atheists who wouldn't make such a assertion.
