I think if we can find a average to solid leadoff hitter, it would make our offense a lot better. I would like to get the Astros on the phone and see what they'd sell Altuve for.
We ain't trading out cleanup hitter, bruh

BJ has made some nice adjustments in the last three games.
He has 15 plate appearances, reached base safely six times, smacked a homer and stolen two bases. Additionally, he only has one strikeout.
I hope it continues. I doubt it does, but I would love to be wrong on that.

Whats your fixation on ichiro? Dude didn't even post a .300 obp last year
I don't have a fixation on Ichiro. He's just someone who could possibly be available and would be a decent enough leadoff to allow Heyward to provide maximum value from the 2 hole.
If the Royals end up sucking and out of contention by the All-star break (doubtful), then frick Ichiro and go after Aoki.

NO. Freeman is the best hitter on this team, is he not? Shouldn't he then bat 2nd or 3rd to get the maximum number of at bats?

I'm not interested in tying in this discussion with the Votto thread. I don't like Freeman in the 2 hole especially if our lead off hitter is mediocre. His ability to drive in runs is wasted in the 2 hole. If our lead off hitter sucks, Heyward's on base and ability to steal a base still gives our 3 and 4 hole hitter a good chance to drive in runs.
While Freeman is our best hitter, dropping him a spot in the order isn't going to affect his at bats by a significant amount... it's very small. Why not move him to lead off then if we're just trying to maximize at bats?

I'd like to see either this...
1 - Simmons
2 - Heyward
3 - Upton
4 - Freeman
or this.
1 - Shafer/?
2 - Simmons
3 - Freeman
4 - Upton
5 - Heyward
Either of those would be a huge downgrade over Heyward in the leadoff spot. Schafer has a career .309 OBP, and even that is inflated by his first half last year. Simmons has a .307 career OBP and doesn't take walks. Right now his OBP is .356 this season, but I would wait a while before I put any stock in that. Meanwhile, Heyward has a .350 career OBP and even has a .311 OBP this season while struggling. He takes tons of walks, so that somewhat protects his value even when he goes into slumps. The only reason people don't like Heyward in that role is because he has power, but he's still the best leadoff option this team has.
ETA: Heyward also leads the team in SB with 4. Simmons has 0. Last year he had only 6 SB and was caught 5 times. Fun fact: BJ is second on the team with 3.

Yeah, cuz the Braves also had great post-season success and surely you shouldn't want to improve yourself.
Heyward came back from that horrific pitch to the jaw with barely a week to play. Tough task to try to get back to the norm and then face the Dodger's pitchers a week later.
Braves were the hottest team in baseball when Heyward was moved to the leadoff spot until his injury.

And if Fredi puts Kimbrell in in the 8th inning the Braves win that series

I agree.
This isn't about who's our best lead off hitter(everyone already knows it's Heyward), it's more or less about maximizing production. Especially, Heyward's production... which maximizes the team's overall production.

I don't think moving either Simmons or Schafer into the leadoff role would maximize production at all. If you move everyone behind them down a spot, it would just decrease their plate appearances so that you can put a low OBP guy at the leadoff spot. This lineup was great last year with Heyward leading off. The easiest change to this lineup would be moving BJ out of the 2nd spot if he starts struggling again.
As for Ichiro, he was bad last year and hasn't been very good since 2010. I wouldn't want to give up anything for him. He also isn't a good defensive player anymore. I think BJ is better than Ichiro as long as he can get back to being close to his career averages, which would make him a very average hitter with some power who plays good defense.

Schafer is 0-7 this season and even failed to get a simple bunt down, yet the hard-ons continue.

Schafer's best role on this team is as a pinch runner and every once in a while he can give a guy a day off.

We'll just have to agree to disagree then on where we think Heyward best fits.

Historically, he thrives at leadoff. This is really not debatable.
Posted on 4/15/14 at 11:12 am to papz
So what is being debated is whether or not it's a good idea to move a guy out of his thriving position in the order on a team with no other legitimate option at leadoff? Not debatable. That is essentially the definition of overmanaging.
