In our program, that's the easy part. The profs don't want you to do poorly and lose your scholarship (with a few exceptions). Research, on the other hand, is two steps forward, 1.75 steps back at best.

Penn State didn't mind failing every person in the class because I believe they truly want to combat grade inflation. Plus, PSU has a pretty stellar academic reputation. I agree though that my thesis was much more difficult than the coursework, and if I wasn't trying to maintain a perfect GPA, things would have been a lot easier. In other words, most of the difficulty was of my own doing.
