Natchez Regional Medical Center is filing for bankruptcy. It's a county owned hospital. I didn't know they could go bankrupt. Any OT'ers got any inside info?

I know that their bills are outrageous.

SW MS and Bankrupt go hand in hand

This will be happening more and more. Small town hospitals will be going bankrupt all the time. Cant survive with cut reimbursements.

Not sure of the ownership, but it appears they do not receive any kind of a property tax collection that would be available through a hospital district.
Bankruptcy could have happened for a variety of reasons, but some of the more rural hospitals that are heavily dependant upon govt reimbursements are going to be increasingly difficult to operate. Costs are still sky high (pre or post obamacare) and rural hospitals often don't have the population needed to supply the necessary volume.
Natchez RMC shouldn't have that problem though. Enough population around Natchez. I'm not aware of other factors such as competition around Natchez, but hospital administation as a whole is something I would want no part of.

I've heard we're going to be seeing a shite-ton of these small hospitals serving smaller towns and rural areas going bankrupt as a result of medicare cuts in Obamacare.

Likely true. The problem for some of these old non-profits is if they get a negative reputation in the community. If private payors are choosing to go to other hospitals and take elective procedures in smaller, nicer surgery centers then the old mainstay is left serving the poor or uninsured. Anyone with means is choosing a better or, at least, perceived to be better quality of care.
eta: the success of the smaller surgery center that offers ownership to successful area docs is also hurting the old mainstay traditional acute care hospitals.

It is all due to Obamacare. This is just the tip of the iceberg. More uninsured than before Obamacare, medicare and medicaid have cut reimbursements, and private insurers base their payments off of the medicare rates. This equals more uninsured using the hospitals as a clinic, and the ones who use it correctly, their insurance is barely covering the cost of their care. Thanks Obama

I think the issue they have is the poors don't pay a dime and the folks with money will drive to baton rouge

or Jackson. Even the St. Dominic' s commercial has a guy from Natchez telling about his heart attack experience at St. D's. LINK

Natchez Regional has been teetering on bankruptcy for many years.
People with any money in NTZ either go to BR or Jackson for any major medical needs. Natchez Regional gets the very routine procedures and the poors.

As much as I would like to blame Obama this one is not his doing. Natchez Regional has gone to shite over the last 20 years. Couple this with compitition from a smaller hospital in town and outpatient surgeries and they have been doomed for some time now.

Is this the old Jefferson Davis hospital?

Doctors get paid too much. Drug companies charge too much. Insurance costs too much. It's all about the money grab.

That smaller hospital is owned by Catholic Health Systems and is likely to buy Natchez Regional after they've gone through bankruptcy and shed some of their debt
