moving uptown in june, going to get my first handgun, ive owned a few shotguns, but never a handgun.
im looking at the M&P 9mm and a beretta 9mm, is it just personal feel and preference or do you suggest one over the other?
no 1911's please, sorry KR

I have not had any experience with either, but I would suggest handling (and shooting if possible) as many different ones as you can. You may even like the feel of one you haven't considered, or rule out one of your choices.

I like the M&P out of those two

Don't worry too much about which one. Which ever one you buy, it won't be your last. They're like Lays potato chips.

You might want check out Bapple youtube channel. He has many different hand gun reviews and a lot of knowledge to learn from.
Bapple, you need to start charging per video man.

M&P, and good choice on 9mm. Make sure to keep hollow points in it for self defense.

I bought my old man a M&P shield 9mm for Christmas. It's pretty awesome. Small enough to carry but big enough to feel like a full pistol. I like it a lot. No experience with Beretta 9mm.

M&P is very nice. Great gun. Can't get over the trigger but that can be remedied with an apex kit.
Walther PPQ is an excellent gun. My favorite striker fired gun. Great Trigger and ergo.
XD's/XDm are also very nice.
The Beretta I'm assuming you are referring to is the PX4. This is a da/sa type. Takes a little more learning to do but I prefer them over striker.
In DA/SA I would do...
CZ75 P07 Duty very nice with great ergo's.
FNX grip is aggressively textured but the overall feel of the gun is top notch
Sig Sp2022 very well made gun

I would try to fire them at a range if you can. If you can't then the next best thing is to go to somewhere that you can dry fire. Jims in BR does.

Thanks a bunch for linking.

If the views happened to go through the roof that would take care of itself.
But as for the OP, both are good choices. Here are questions to answer though(and I cover this in my first time buyers video).
1. Do you want a firearm with an external hammer? Most of the modern ones (besides the 1911) will also have two different trigger pulls to get accustomed to (single action and double action). Modern striker fired polymer pistols have one trigger pull every time.
2. Do you plan on carrying it? If not, a full sized handgun will suit you better. But if not, consider a single stack compact because you will be more likely to carry it.
Come back if you have any more questions.

No need to apologize. There's plenty of room on the bandwagon. Don't let the wanna-be Seal Team Sixers get to you. All they are doing by being arrogant is driving people away. The last thing we need is fewer people who want to responsibly own handguns.
On topic: Are you dead set on those two models only? If so, as stated earlier, fondle them and shoot them if you can. Go with what feels best to you. Most modern guns are at least decent quality. You just need to decide what features you want most. You'll figure that out after you buy your first, and then that will lead you to buy more. And more. And more.

What's it going to be used for, e.g. home defense, truck gun, recreational shooting, concealed carry, etc."

Have you tried a P99. DA/SA like the CZ and FNX, and striker fired like the PPQ. I don't know why Walther doesn't advertise them more.

Up voted. I thought the same thing the first time I read the thread. If anything, we should be thanking you for buying your first gun. The more responsible gun owners, the better.
Also just wanted to add that whatever you buy, shoot it, shoot it, and shoot it some more. Get as comfortable as possible with it.

I'll never understand why a list of guns like this always leaves out HK on this site. Like another gun on that list is the same just cheaper or something? It might not be worth it to you, but they are unique weapons and arguably the best made polymer framed gun on the market.

HK is so expensive, but they are awesome.

To me the most comfortable semi-autos I've fired are Berettas and CZs. I feel like I have more surface area on my hand in contact with the gun which gives me a feeling of better control with less felt recoil.
YMMV

Every time you pump up HK, it throws me off. Most would expect you to be a Glock fanboy.
I have very limited experience with HK pistols. I have only fired a Mk23 and a USP40. If I ever get access to land, I would love to test some of your pistols. We'll see if I ever do.
/sorry to steer off track

I'd personally rather a Sig than a HK. The only gun HK has that I like is basically a clone of my PPQ
