Game of Thrones Newb(Sort of) Minor Spoilers

I finally got around to watching Got, and holy shite this is awesome. I watched all 3 seasons in about a month. I am very good about spoilers, so everything was a shock to me(Red Wedding good lord).
My question to book readers. Without giving me spoilers is it necessary to read books 1 and 2 before 3. Are the books much different from the series to where I would be lost if I started 3? I can't stop obsessing over this and I know the books must be much better.
PLEASE NO SPOILERS

Absolutely. The first one you'd be ok, but the second one diverts. Start from the beginning though.

Yes. Read the books in order beginning with book 1. It is worth your while.
Besides, one day you'll find yourself finished all the books and having to wait interminably to find out when (and if) the next book will ever come out. By starting at the beginning you can put that day off as long as possible.

If you don't read all the books. you'll miss out on all the background information not given in the show.

Yes and no. The books are much better than the show and there's so much background stuff you catch in the books that you don't in the show.

One of the most important things about reading the books is that you get to read what Ned's thoughts are and there are other things that give pretty large hints as to who Jon Snow's parents are. I haven't read books 4 or 5 yet and I already have a pretty strong assumption as to who his parents are.

Change you title to say minor spoilers just so no one sees the red wedding thing and gets spoiled for them. I know you didn't say anything but still better to be safe for others.
And yeah read the first ones. It gets a little boring because you know what's going on but it's great for learning backgrounds and stuff. There are things in the book that make you form theories that you never would have come up with by watching because they don't show you.
Also I suggest watching the season again. You will pick up on so much stuff.

Read them all in order
Season 1 and book 1 are very similar but there's some important info in The book that's not in the show

I remember when I read someone's dream and was like holy frick I know who the mom is!
I texted my buddy who read the books before there was ever a show and he was like yeah that's a theory a lot of people believe.
I'm so ready for the new season

I started with book 3 but read chapter summaries of the first two online... I then went back and read book 1&2 after 5.
I was okay.
I was okay.

You were not okay. You were transformed into a book reading bastard.

This is pretty much it. I thought I was in a race knocking out book after book until I finished and there is no 6th book in sight yet. I really thought that by the time I finished them up he would have had the last couple book together and one of them out at least.
Here is a tip for you if you decide to read all the books, download one of the pay apps for your phone or tablet to help you keep up with all the names. This is especially true up front when they start throwing a ton of names at you that you need to know.

The first season and book are extremely close but it deviates more and more as the show progresses.

My rice loving roommate can hook you up with the books
