Impressing my peers on this board? I've got a Minor Threat avatar. I love a lot of music most people think is terrible.

I agree. I was responding to someone citing said music as being highly influential.

The problem with the information and technology age is that it puts too much information in the wrong hands. Now, every "foodie" thinks they are Anthony Bourdain, and every wanna be hipster thinks they write for Pitchfork. I think a lot of folks overlook the subjective appeal of art.

Or they just have an irrational hatred of Kiss. I blame my mother.

Uh huh, but he's got a loyal fan base. I probably should have said Alton Brown. I'm more of a Bizarre Foods kind of guy.

Come on man. Seriously? Kiss had a few good songs and some highly entertaining stage shows. Gene Simmons is a marketing genius. He knew he could make a fortune by Keeping it simple stupid.

I know that you're one the guys that think it makes them look cool & hip to dislike the band.
but you are a damn fool to try to deny that kiss' music didn't have an influence a lot of bands.
although, i'm certain you hate it too, you can't dispute that they didn't play role in the hard rock scene that was prominent in the 80's.

Its comical that posters in here are laughing at the notion that KISS influenced a lot of later bands when the ARTISTS THEMSELVES have said that one of their major influences was KISS

I'm around the same age as the OP but I was never a KISS fan as a kid. My brother and cousin were, had some friends that were, but I was never really into it. But when they put the make up back on and toured with Peter and Ace again in the mid 90's I went with a group of friends and it was a great show we had a blast (of course we were completely wasted ). The idea that because the music is simple or because they marketed themselves well means its crap that no one was influenced by is ridiculous.

I really only see this reasoning on the internet. If you dislike something someone else likes it can only be because you're trying to "look cool & hip". It couldn't be that the guy just has a different opinion. I think that you're one the guys that thinks it makes them look cool & hip to tell people they're trying to look cool & hip by disagreeing with you.

It's not like hating Kiss is some recent phenomenon perpetrated by hipsters. A lot, if not most people have hated them from their inception. There's a thread right now, '5 music acts I can't get into' or something like that, and Kiss is included. Most of the thread agrees with him. Are they all just trying to look cool & hip? What about the OP? He grew up a huge fan, and says they're "terrible" and "suuuuucks". Is he just trying to be cool & hip?

That's not how I remember the 70's. Maybe the critics hated, but not the average rock fan. They were huge. There was excitement when they came to town. Like most acts that stay around too long, people just got sick of them and their shtick; plus their music deteriorated over the years. IMO, they put out two great live albums and a bunch of good rock n roll studio releases, most specifically the early stuff.

For the record, I, the OP, never said that KISS does not deserve to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

I did not say they weren't great entertainers;

I did not say they did not influence lots of bands (hell, I started guitar lessons because of KISS--I just didn't "get it" and my fingers were too short).

I did not say I hated KISS. In fact, they are one of my greatest childhood memories. They introduced me to the notion that music could be "mine", if you understand what I'm saying. They opened the door to one of the most important aspects of my life.

Even though their music is kind of terrible (with a few exceptions, obviously), KISS fricking rules in my book.

Same here. Summertime. Playing outside. Skateboarding down driveways. Shooting hoops. "Partying" with the older kids on the block. Someone always had a boombox blaring KISS.

Its not disliking something that someone else likes that comes across as trying to be cool by dis'ing on it, it is disliking it or seeming to dislike because other people like it. I don't think that necessarily applies here, however criticisms that have been made like the music is simple or people where only influenced by the theatricality of the shows does come across that way. If you don't like KISS that's understandable (I'm not a big fan either, though I don't hate them). But when you dismiss the possibility of influencing other artists in such a mocking way, it can be interpreted as just trying to look cool by bashing something others like.

I suppose I see your point. If I came across as mocking, I didn't intend it. I just have a lifelong dislike of this band, and this thread seemed like a good place to air it. I'm not trying to crap on anyone's taste.

Rock and Roll Over was my first album. I thought the Kiss radio on TV played just KISS songs. I was mad at my mother for not buying it.
