what they can and should do is to renoucne the Federal Reserve Note as the world reserve currency. They could do that buy dumping their existing holdings of UST's and by fomenting new trade agreements with other countries, wherein the USD is not the primary means of settlement.
which would cause economic collapse of most of the western world, not just the US. they tried this in europe with the petrodollar and it was an abject failure. you think we got problems? have you looked at the economies in europe lately? Do you think Russia wants a world where the strongest economy across the board in Europe is GERMANY?
quote:
China is aligned with the Russians on this issue, and like Russia, possesses significant US debt holdings. Right now, Russia is the world's leading oil producer. And they are not a debtor nation. China, likewise, is not in debt, and is the world's largest manufacturer. Sure they have long-term issues but we're talking about the next 6 months or so.
and all of that is only good if the US economy is functional. China is a manufacturing leader sure, and what good is that if the US cant/wont buy their goods? Russia is a resource leader but cant feed itself.
there is an opposite of supply called demand that you might want to consider
quote:
Even based on your OP, it seems to me that you're coming around to the fact that this country operates from a position of weakness and that in this case, the Russians operate from a position of strength. Our leaders are playing checkers, and the other side plays chess.
you have got to be kidding me. Russia and Putin are the clumsiest and most ham handed bullies on the block. They are testing the world, we are yelling at them, they will do what they want, we will protest, nothing will happen because the stakes are too high for both sides
quote:
At this point, Russia and China have a tremendous advantage: they have the cash (not tied to Fedreserve funny money Ponzi schemes), they got most of the natural resources, the manufacturing, the population numbers, and the will to say frick You to the Obama admin. I suspect that other countries with a will to say FU will come out of the woodwork once Russia and China step forward.
except China's economy is worthless without having someone to buy their cheap crap from them and russia cant feed themselves
go buy some wheat, stockpile your water and bury your gold, the end is nigh

Way to try to sidetrack the thread.
FWIW, the good old USA is doing fine in the natural resources department. China is importing plenty from allies of ours, and although Russia has oil and gas we have plenty too. In fact, Russian O&G is being hurt quite a bit by the fracking taking place here.

This is just "one of those things" I would be SHOCKED if Russia stranded American astronauts up there, or let them rot in Siberia when they did get back on Earth.

What if I told you that the shuttle program was ended during the Bush administration?

It would still make me a bit nervous if I were up there. I guess one has to have balls of steel to get blasted into space IN A RUSSIAN VEHICLE in the first place so maybe they are not shaken.
Why? The Russian Soyuz program has a fair better safety record than the shuttle did.
There is a Soyuz capsule docked at the ISS at all times for emergency egress, they can leave the ISS any time they want. The capsule can only carry three, that is why there are never more than three people on the ISS at any time.

Very good info. Thanks. I guess I am still brainwashed from the Cold War era and believe everything produced in Russia is inferior.

Actually, there are 6

There are currently only 3, that mission is comprised of two parts, crew of 3 in each half. But actually I should have said if there is only one capsule docked there can only be three people, they could have two capsules docked and have 6 people on the station.

This isn't 1940. This country is a mess internally and IMO our attention should be focused on that rather that what happens in Ukraine
Wait, 1940, the US economy was doing great? Read a history book and understand we were far from great in 1940. The war and some programs by FDR (nothing to do with healthcare but actually providing jobs to the unemployed) helped turn this country around from the greatest economic crisis in the world but it wasn't until after 1944 when it all started to shift.
Nice try though.

It would mean an instant 2x-4x price increase on everything we buy that is imported.
...and if the US stopped buying imported goods, the world economy would go down faster than a Russian hooker in a Moscow cab. The US consumer is the engine that drives the world's economy. Without us, they screwed.

apparently having abundant resources or massive manufacturing capabilities is all russia and china need. A consumption outlet for those resources or a consumer for those manufactured goods is not necessary
apparently his economic philosophy is driven by the concept of supply and supply

This is the correct answer. Soyuz is very 70's and cramped and all that. But it does get people into orbit and back down again safely. When you do the same thing over and over for 40 years with minor tweaks you tend to get reliable results even if you aren't trying to improve anything.

Honestly, the world economy is collectively screwed. If you take any of the major players out, the whole thing crumbles for everyone. Yes, the world central banks led by our Federal Reserve have been slowly destroying the economy with boom and bust cycles for the past century now. Competitive capitalism with endless growth and consumption is on its last legs. It is unsustainable and basically finished. That is a good thing but the transition to something new is going to suck.

The threats are now coming about leaving our guys up there. I doubt it will happen but it looks like I was right to be concerned before any of the news outlets considered this possibility.
