Why do we need to get involved?

Ukraine is an ally of the US. All of Eastern Europe looks to the US to counter balance Russia.

Are the "security assurances" an actual treaty?

Ukraine did deploy troops to both Iraq and Afghanistan to help us out. I guess that doesnt mean shite though.

That was the Ukranian government though. The same government the Russians support
So by that logic, the US should help quell the uprising?

The "EU is currently weighing 'targeted measures' if Russia doesn't back off on Ukraine" is a headline from sometime earlier today

Despite the claims, the EU is threatening to freeze visa liberalization and economic cooperation talks and boycott the G8 summit in Russia's Sochi if Moscow does not back off in Ukraine.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the EU would give Russia until an emergency summit of EU leaders is held on Thursday to show clear signs of goodwill, including a willingness to open talks and a withdrawal of Russian troops to their barracks in the Crimea.

just updated my post w/ quote and link.
not exactly as deep of measures as we'd like, but at least they are making a definitive stand on Russian aggression and provocation

Why do we need to get involved?
Because Ukraine is a huge economic and military power grab.
Which is why we've spent billion to subvert Ukrainian politics over the last two decades.
Having a pro western regime in office is huge. Getting Ukraine on the western banking block is even bigger.
Russia's economy is reliant on the pipelines that run through Ukraine. If the west controls Ukraine and can install NATO it's a huge economic and military win as we further isolate Russia.

Obviously that depends who you are.
Are you, me or any other American citizen directly effected unless we have relatives or friends in Ukraine?
No. Probably not.
One could argue that it hinders US interests, but does it really? Enough we should go to war over?

That's what I'm getting at...it appears that only Putin wins in this scenario.
