Anyone here a part of a small faith group?

I don't mean to rustle any of the believers/nonbelievers jimmies. I was just wanting to get opinions on how they work, and how they affect peoples lives.

I've been in a small group before. What are your questions?
Some are men only, others women only, and others still are couples. I belonged to a couples group that met every other week. I really enjoyed the study we did and the fellowship. It made a very positive impact on my marriage.

I still have faith that the LSU Football team might still win the SEC Championship, does that count?

Are you referring to something like a house church or a small group that is part of a larger church?

Well, I haven't been in church or read the bible and followed it as well as one should. A girl I'm seeing kind of got me interested in it again and I found a campus type church that streams Andy Stanley's sermons. He talks about life groups and small groups and the church talks about them, too. I was wondering exactly what should someone look forward to who's usually not as knowledgeable or open about religion.

If anyone looks down on you for your "lack of knowledge" then they aren't living a Christian life and you don't want to be part of that group.

I have faith that this religious thread will not get wacked.

It all depends on the dynamic of the small group itself. I am part of a small group that meets during the week that is part of a larger church. (We are not a "mega church") Groups can be a little overwhelming for someone who has not been in church for a while and who is not versed in the Word. But I would welcome anyone in the group and meet them where they are in their lives even if they are opposed to some things that I believe in. I feel that's what small groups are all about....having intimate discussions about what God is doing in our lives and supporting everyone in the group.
I hope you find what you are looking for.

I am in a covenant group of about 6 or so men that I meet with on a weekly basis. ..I find it very beneficial in my life....

I'm in one. I've gone to it most every week that I could for the last 2 or 3 years. Most of us are from the same church but we have some friends from other churches that come just to hang out. We usually do like 30-45 minutes of "Bible study" and then we just hang out until people go home.
For me, it's less about having someone tell me how to live my life the right way and more about just going to see how other people think about topics that I've already formed an opinion on. It just challenges you to take a step back and maybe look at things from a different perspective...and it's cool to have a night where you know it will be low key and you'll have a chance to catch up with people you might not have a chance to talk to that often. A lot of the guys in my group are 5 or so years younger than me and ask questions about buying a house and investing their money and relationships and stuff. It makes me feel like I'm helping people out I guess.
If you're thinking about giving it a shot, I would recommend trying to get to know one of the group leaders outside of the group setting first to see what you think. I was a part of one in college and the guy that hosted the meetings was relentless in pressuring me to go despite having homework and exams and work to take care of. If you find one that doesn't seem like a super clinger, I'd say give it a shot and see how you like it. Worst thing that could happen is you'll make some new friends. I would offer you to come to mine but then your internet anonymity would be toast.

This.
There's no room for that in a legit bible study group.

To expound on my last post, as far as my personal experience in a small group, I find it more beneficial than going to "regular" church on Sunday, even though I think they are both important. IMO, small groups is how church really started. Believers getting together to "share life". It's more personal. Good luck to you.

This was not my experience at all. We actually physically put an empty chair at the table every time that we met to remind each other to invite someone. There was never any stipulation that this person needed a certain knowledge base. In fact, it was quite the opposite. We wanted to invite someone non-churched so that they could come to know the joy we had.

That's great. I just wanted the OP to be aware that all small groups are not as open. My wife and I is throwing around the idea of having a small group at our house and inviting mainly people that do not attend church. Would be very interesting.

I meet with three other guys every Tuesday morning for some prayer time and discussion of whatever topic comes up. Often it centers around whatever we are teaching in our Sunday school groups or the sermon topic for that past Sunday. Primarily, we support one another in prayer and accountability in being the men we are called to be in scripture. We are not the type of guys that get all up in our feelings but there have been some pretty serious discussions. We are all of the same denominational background, (Southern Baptist), but there are variances in our theology. Bottom line is..it works well for us. I look forward to it each Tuesday and miss it greatly when I am unable to attend.

I'm part of a large faith group that's been meeting for a little more than 2,000 yrs. Going pretty strong, and with hope getting stronger!
