I've not had to take that type of shot before, but I may have to someday. W/ the type of situation you described, your choices are two: 1. Make a "neck shot" by aiming at the base of the white spot on the front of the deer's neck. That's a very demanding shot. 2. Aim at the midline in the lower 1/3 of the chest to make a "heart/lung shot." I don't know what kind of bullet/round you were using, but as long as it was adequate and made it into the heart/lungs, I think there's good chance you'll recover a dead deer. It's unlikely you'll have an exit wound, but he'll probably die peacefully overnight.

Thanks for the article. I don't normally takes those type shots but felt it was necessary.

Base of the neck FTMW. Catch the spine and lungs. Usually get the heart to!
