How rare is this for a relatively healthy, non overweight male?

Kinda makes all that OT Baller talk irrelevant.

might be a genetic illness called familial hypercholesterolemia...essentially the inability to breakdown cholesterol (so you could otherwise look and be healthy, but still have a heart attack)

My wife's father had his first heart attack in his 30's. He died on the table during open heart surgery when he was in his early 40's.

No but a friend just died of one. Actually it was deemed "Heart failure" which I guess is a bit different.

non overweight male
Healthy male? Heart attacks are extremely uncommon for healthy people. Problem is people attach the definition of health by a person's apperance, which you can't do. There are plenty of skinny and otherwise "normal" weighted people that have heart attacks. It has little to do with the weight itself and more to do with the habits that individuals have that contribute to heart disease.
There are plenty of people that eat poorly, don't exercise, lead stressful lives but you would never know it by looking at them. Those factors all contribute significantly to heart disease.

I have a heart problem (faulty heart valve and irregular heart beat)and take medicine each day. 36.
I have actually been to the ER twice thinking it was an early stroke.
I'm a little over weight (10-15 ibs), workout when I can, health otherwise according to my doctor, it's just something I will live with my whole life.

How did you get diagnosed with that? At what age?

Please define "relatively healthy" and "overweight" as you want them to be used in this answer. If you use "no significant PMH, does not take any medication, does not use drugs, does not smoke" and "BMI <25," the answer is "extremely rare." The main cause coming to mind here is an ASD leading to a clot from the legs (your lungs usually act like a filter for really little ones, and they don't really bother the lungs, the ones that I am talking about) going through the ASD and into the left side of the heart, then into coronary circulation. I don't know numbers, but I think strokes are more common in this group than heart attacks. Both pretty rare, but probably the most common cause in someone using my definition for your words.

If you're feeling funny, why not go to a doctor?
Posted on 1/24/14 at 3:06 pm to pelicandon
Knew a guy in the Army that had one at 27, but he wasn't exactly the healthiest soldier. A combination of heavy stress, heavy smoking, and heavy drinking nearly killed him.
