Just realized something from the "Her" thread below (Star Wars Related)

SPOILERS...Because someone will bitch if I don't put it for a movie older than the median age of this site's readers.
In ESB, Vader clearly cuts off Luke's right hand at the wrist. Yet, when the medical droid gives him a new hand, the circuitry to operate his hand visibly takes up at least half of Luke's right forearm.
How far up do the mechanics go, and just how much of Luke's actual arm had to be lopped off in surgery for him to be fitted with a new hand?

Why do you think anyone has the answer to this question?

Guessing someone may have read something in the EU that may explain. Would suck if he lost his entire arm just to get his hand back.

Not really. His arm seemed fine in the next movie. I like your logic on this, but if that is the most efficient way to give somebody a full, working arm again, it makes sense.

quote:
The scene as described by the officially released screenplay: Then Vader's sword comes down across Luke's right forearm, cutting off his hand and sending his sword flying. In great pain, Luke squeezes his forearm under his left armpit and moves back along the gantry to its extreme end.
