I'm gonna put him behind the 30-30 this weekend
Just make sure it fits him halfway decent before he lights one off. I'm sure he'll be so excited to shoot the big gun that he won't notice anything, but it sucks to shoot a gun that's wayyyyy too long.
I'm a short bastard so I know all too well

My .30/30 lever action 336 kicks worse than my bolt action .270. If your .30/30 is not a full size gun, I wouldn't let him shoot it. The weight and build of the gun is just as important as the cartridge.

Next year I am moving my 10 year old up to this. Great rifle, adjustable length stock, adjustable trigger, guaranteed to shoot under 1 inch at 100 yds, and priced under 500.00 online. I am going with the 7mm-08 but 243 is another option.

When he shoots the 30-30, give him a fun target to shoot. Fill gallon jugs with water so they explode. I find that helps them worry less about recoil in that situation.
