I like the .260 or 7mm-08 better than a .243 personally. My some has a .243 but, I didn't buy it for him, my FNL did. My wife has a Rem Model 7 youth .260 and I LOVE it!! I use it when I climb or hunt loc-ons. I've killed deer over 300 yards with it too. The recoil is slightly more then a .243 and is comparable to a 7mm-08.
Plus I think it would be mor versatile as he gets older.
Also make sure the stock fits him, have him put the stock in his elbow instead of his shoulder, see where his finger is on he trigger, not touching, it's to big, finger through to last knuckle, to small.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm gonna put him behind the 30-30 this weekend and see how he handles that, then make a decision based on that. Y'all comments gave me a few new ideas and more info, thanks again!
