Help settle a bet...CFB

My hypothetical...
XYZ college football program has been in no man's land for a decade. They make a HC hire and he wins a NC in four years.
He's clearly a transcendent type coach.
He's young, energetic, he is the hottest HC in CFB.
It's clear he is going to compete for NC's at this university for years to come.
It's time for the University to step to the plate, give him a long term contract to keep him because its clear he wants to stay.
Here's the question....how many schools in the country COULD AND WOULD pay him 4-5mm a year to be their long term coach.
I say there's 20-25 schools that would write that check....
Including 1/2 the SEC, all the usual suspects (see below) and throw in Michigan, Nebraska, A&M, PSU, FSU, Miami, OU, Oregon...etc
He says there's maybe 3-4 including UT, Bama, tOSU, and maybe ND or USC.
What say you?

You're right, and he's wrong.

i'd bet more than half the SEC would. shite, i think more than half of SEC coaches already make in that range.
eta: 4 currently in the SEC alone
1. Nick Saban, Alabama – $5,545,852
3. Bret Bielema, Arkansas – $5,158,863
4. Butch Jones, Tennessee — $4,860,000
7. Les Miles, LSU – $4,459,363

at least 20, especially with the new Tv contract money.

You're absolutely right.
If he's winning, and winning NCs, a ton of schools could find the cash to pay him. 20-25 might even be low. Hell most of the SEC probably could, instead of half.

look at it this way
Missouri is paying Pinkel 2.6 to 2.9 with bonuses to win ZERO conference titles. You don't think they go to 4, with a title winner?

FFS does your friend know how much Ole Miss has been paying their coaches?

Exactly. I'm actually pretty confident all of the SEC could step up. Winning makes money. Especially in the SEC. No SEC team would let him walk for 4-5MM. Now we get up to 7 or 8MM and the schools probably start to dwindle. But I think people would be surprised how many schools would pay big bucks to keep a NC winning coach.

I don't follow CFB very closely. What did they do to deserve that kind of money?

hopped on the college coaching choo choo train. You hop on at one stop, then wait to hop on another, getting your pockets filled at each stop.
Both were extremely desperate and over paid.

Bielema doesnt make that much. I think hes around 3milion range
Posted on 12/25/13 at 8:06 pm to lsuroadie
You're both wrong bc it is way more than 20-25

Bret gets 2 mil from Wisconsin and 3 from arky

Iowa is paying 3.65 million a year to a coach that's not even that good. You are much closer to the truth, probably even more.

I'm going to use Indiana as an example. They are currently paying their coach 1.2 million/year. There's almost no interest in the program. If some hotshot coach won them a national title and turned them into a top program, I would bet anything they would pay 5 million a year to keep him. Sure it's a basketball school, but they have some rich alumni who would pony up donations for a top football program.

I'm pretty sure he gets 3 from arky, and the other 2 is from arky to pay off his release to Wisconsin

I would be surprised if any current BCS school would let a NC winning coach go for the 4-5 mil range
