Is receiving the opening kickoff the dumbest strategy move in football?

There's no bigger advantage in football than being able to score right before the half then getting the ball back after halftime and scoring again.
Egomaniacs take the ball. IMO
You should always defer.

While i also would defer, its it no where close to the "dumbest" strategy in FB

If you have a high powered offense it makes sense to take the ball straight away imo, back yourself to score and put the other team under pressure straight away

You should usually defer but there are arguments for taking the ball under certain circumstances like if you have a really explosive offense and you're on the road as an underdog you may take the ball to get a quick score and take the crowd out of it

If you have an awesome offense then try to score 14 points in a row before the half then after the half.

I always receive, and have multiple National Championships in NCAA so there's that.

Well yeah but you still need a little luck to do that in terms of getting the ball back with enough time to score but not enough for them to respond at the end of the 1st half

Statistically it probably makes no difference

If my defense sucks, why would I want to start the game in a hole vs forcing the other team to play catch up? There is no guarantee if you defer, that you'll have the ball last in the first half. Your reasoning is mad maddenish.

No. Taking opening possession, scoring, forcing a punt and scoring again can be a game changer if the opposing team is a running team or if you're the away team.

You're going to have a possession late in the 2nd quarter. It's then up to the offense to put a drive together.

One thing I dont think most people understand is that when a team wins the coin toss and defers to the 2nd half, they aren't defering to recieve the ball. They are deferring their choice to the 2nd half. They could choose to kick to start the 2nd half although I dont think that has ever happened.

You missed the jet to the bedroom

A&M had the ball first like 10 games in a row last year (2012) and scored a TD on every first drive. It can be an advantage with a prolific offense.

Lol.. the frick. The only way to get the ball back after half is to defer. Unless Bradie James decides to kick to open the game.

Yeah that was awful. Thank goodness it was just Mississippi State and not some game that it could have made a difference in the outcome

kinda assuming you'd have the ball last in the first half and would score?
