I know diamonds are a poor investment, but of course the wife likes them. Does anyone on the MT board know of a wholesale type place/site where at least I wouldn't have to pay the 300% mark up on a diamond/diamond ring that I would at a retail jeweler?

Used would be the way to go

Used GIA certified is the way to go...

I've used blue Nile, fair prices.

I have a friend who regularly shops at better pawn shops. She has her own loupe. What she buys she takes to a jeweler and has reset.

Working in the industry, I can tell you bluenile is good, but take some time and check out stuller. That's where a lot of your settings come from, they're based in LAF.
If you're doing rings, you're much better off getting a cheaper setting and putting your equity into a nice GIA center stone
