Mills is a stud! Period!
I would probably consider him our D MVP to this point. Sure he's given up a play here-n-there but he's also been our most consistent player.

Chavis absolutely deserves some criticism. A lot of good points have been made why

3rd and chavis is real. It was real when we were loaded with NFL ready defenders, and it's real now.

If the average fan like myself can tell you which guys are blitzing
Foolish fans are always saying they can predict this and that - it's bullshite. Tell me two seconds before the snap, who is going to blitz. You'll be right 20% of the time; same as a monkey!

The secondary is the weakest unit
I don't see how anyone could say this. IMO, they are our strongest unit, specifically the corners
Man, you are 100% correct! So many observers are so uninformed that they think the secondary stinks if you're giving up passing yardage. It's often a lack of pressure.

we'd rather get torched playing aggressive than get torched playing passive.
and with aggressive play there are more opportunities for big plays.
nothing worse than watching your defense letting the other team march down the field, first down after first down, with no pass rush and no 5th or 6th rushers every now and again.
If we felt he was dialing up and trying something different, we'd feel better.
at least if we get torched with the big play becaused we pressured there is some time left on he clock for the offense.
I haven't noticed other teams sitting back and letting us pass without trying to bring pressure.

First of all, it's called The Rant, and that's what we do on this board. I don't like all of it or agree with it often, but I like to hear what others think. That doesn't mean I'm not a good fan. I'm an alumni for the past 33 years, and a fan since I was an little guy. If you want to run down the DC or OC, fine with me. If you want to say you like or dislike Miles, Chavis, Cameron, etc. - ok with me, too. Venting frustration is one of the purposes of The Rant, as much as positive statements are welcome. If we only are to post positive things, then change the site's name to The Love Fest.
Secondly, my only real frustration with Chavis was with the Bama game from last year (2012). His prevent-defense scheme was way too soft, and Saban had him smelled out ahead of time, like he knew exactly what Chavis would do. That's Chavis being too predictable. This season, we did not re-load , we are rebuilding. I am disappointed with that, but it is what it is. Some of our guys that were supposedly ready to step up, did not and have not. We evidently either missed on recruits or we have more work to do to get them to the levels we are accustomed to. Either way, I love my Tigers!!

I agree. Since we struggle to stop the better O's (as in Bama and A&M), might as well try for some TO's.

Bama 2012, Clemson 2012, Ole Miss 2013, UGA 2013. Defense gets a last drive stop and we win.
Over and out
Over and out

I think with all the talk of "scheming" we forget about his day job.
What Chavis is, is an excellent coach in regards to teaching young men how to play football. Period. Hell, Micheal Brockers and the gang are all flourishing in the league.
He can't use the ole 'they all went pro' excuse every year; cause it's going to happen every year. But:
1. this year isn't over (people will be eating their words)
2. when a team "reloads" there is bound to be some times when the guys aren't as good as the guys that left.
3. considering #2 couldn't be more real than saying we are currently suffering from the worst hang-over EVER after having lost the best secondary EVER over the last 3 seasons.
4. But Chavis will straighten the course this year, and our DEFENSIVE BACKFEILD WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL BY NEXT YEAR

As others have noted, even with all our talent still on-board in '12, there were some disappointing endings. Chavis is a good DC. He has flaws. All coordinators do. But the man really needs to rethink what he's doing in "prevent" mode 'cause it ain't working.

We should blitz more.

This is what I don't understand. It has long been said that Chavis runs one of the most basic defenses in the SEC. No team has ever played us and said, "Wow, we just couldn't figure out where the defense was blitzing from." I can understand the drop off in talent, but something is really wrong with us not being able to line up in basic fronts and execute basic coverages.
Tx atm from last year says hello

Being a youth football coach & helping with high school, I may not agree with everything Coach Miles & Chief does.. even wonder what the heck, but dang.. calling them out, that's not right. They both got my vote. I hope my kids over here in the panhandle get the honor to play for those two coaches.

You nailed it here. So much bitching, pissing, and moaning it's unbelievable.

I would just love for someone to cite one defense in the history of college football who lost 7 starters, six of them juniors, to the nfl, the next season had two true freshman starting at cb/nickel, and fielded a defense anywhere near the top 50, much less 25th in the fricking nation.
that explains this year- what happened last year?

It is not a matter of losing it is how we have lost the last 4 out of 5 games. Yes the players may have been out of position on there own and not the fault of Chavis. I will go on the record and say I love Chavis and yes it could be a lot worse, aka Temper.
Again, it is the way we have lost and I know a lot of that could be blamed on the offense as well. I will say this, the ones that are piling on our fan base, we are no different than any other top program that wants and expects nothing but the best. You really think that if Bama or any other teams fan base would have lost the way we have lost lately would not be doing the same thing, any that thinks different does not have a clue!!!!
