Whats a good age

to get a kid their 1st handgun. My 13yo son told my wife and I he wanted a pistol for Christmas. The wife is totally against it and I'm really leaning more her way. But he has his own rifle and shotgun and goes hunting frequently. He has always been around guns and know what they're capable of and respects them. And he is always there firing off a few rounds when I get my pistols out.

12 year olds are the best age.

Handgun? I'd say in college. Rifle definitely when they are young.
As much of a gun nut now as I am, I won't be giving my kid a handgun until they are older. They can shoot mine all they want and own a rifle/shotgun...but not a handgun while he is in high school

At 13 this was all I needed. I had absolutely no use for a pistol.
Come to think of it, I still have absolutely no use for a pistol.

I'd have to agree with this. Maybe a high school graduation present but 13 yo is kinda young especially if he can just shoot yours when you have it.

Be sure to get him a holster for when he takes it to show and tell. This is a bad idea for a minor child

I don't know that there is a hard and fast rule on a particular age. It all depends on the maturity level of your kid. I had a pistol when I was around his age but my dad kept it with his guns and I only got to shoot it when we went out to shoot together. I couldn't just go get it whenever I wanted and go shoot. Looking back on it this was a good compromise. I got to say that I had a gun but for all intents and purposes it was my dad's pistol. My dad later gave it to me when I moved out of the house to go to college.
The fact that you and your wife are both leaning against getting your son a pistol tells me you have already come to the decision and are just looking for backup.

I don't see why a 13 year old would need a pistol...

EVERY KID IS DIFFERENT YOU HAVE TO BE THE JUDGE OF HOW THEY HANDLE OTHER FIREARMS FIRST.
THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS WITH A PISTOL IT IS MORE LIKELY TO BE POINTED AT THEM IF OR WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG.
With that being said... It's a safe bet that my kid has been around and handled more firearms that 99.9999% of his peers
and I am leery of him being off on his own with a pistol....

18. No need for a kid to have a pistol.

I think its more of a thing where he wants it so he can say he has one of his own. He would never be permitted to use it without me around. Other than that he would have zero access to it. And FTR he is a pretty mature and responsible kid for his age. But my initial response to him was that I'd get him one when he left home.

I agree that it sounds like a good high school grad gift. Tell him you will get him a good one if he makes good grades throughout high school

I got my Ruger Single Six from Santa Claus when I was 11.
Not that I would buy my son one at 11, he has plenty of mine to shoot. Things have changed alot in 20 years.

I got my first handgun at 12, subsequently starting competing after that and now I have a love for pistols that is stuff of legend.

I would think a ruger or browning 22 would make a nice gift for a 13 yr old, if he has the maturity level to handle it. It would still only be something he handled when I was around.
Don't really think 9 or 40 or 45 would be all that appropriate at his age.

Give him his own pistol now with the only stipulation being that he can't even lay eyes on it unless you are there with him.
The kid doesn't want the pistol to sneak around with or get in trouble. He wants the damn thing so in his mind he knows "I own a damn hand cannon"
I've had at least one pistol for as long as I can remember but I wasn't allowed to be in full control of said firearm until I graduated high school.
Some kids prefer to ask for Christmas presents that mean something instead of the latest video game. I still own and shoot many of my childhood Christmas gifts. My brother has no idea where that Atari machine is now days. I have a 30/30 that I got when I was 8 that same years my brother got a ??Who the hell can remember because it was some fad POS that he wanted
