Lack of opportunity
Nope. After Blue's fumble there was plenty of opportunity. Les chose to trust Magee instead.
To answer OP:
Inability to learn new offense?
Poor ball protection in practice?
Poor pass protection?
Low work ethic/ attitude?

Why is Hilliard not as good as he used to be?

He is nursing a small turf toe injury FYI and it is ONE game
And just like people thought Gary James was better than Dalton. Big city boys always get the hype, but we saw in the end who was the best. Hilliard>>James and it will be Hilliard>>Hill.
2012 Offensive Philosophy: We finally have a QB who can throw so you better respect us (300+yds vs Bama alone), but Les and Studd love to pound it, so don't be too pass happy. This put defenses in a bind where they couldn't commit hard to the run like in 2011. Hill fed off of Mett's success.
2011 Offensive Philosophy: Our QB sucks reading a defense so he will run or will hand it off. We are bigger and better up front than you...come and stop us. Defenses put 9 in the box. Yeah that's when Kenny did damage unlike the 2012 season where we could keep the defenses guessing.
Just watch their highlight films. High school or at LSU. That's easy to see who is better.

Don't be too quick to write of Hilliard. When he came into the game it was for power running plays only. TCU was already stacking the line of scrimmage, and they were run blitzing Hilliard on every play.

^^^ This. Hilliard had 4 carries. He's a type of back that wears a defense down the more carries he gets. Unfortunately we have 4 running backs to split carries with and I'm not sure that'll happen.

It's hard to have success with 2 carries.

I'd just like to point out that it's awesome that we have the gift of being able to run (and argue about) 4 studs of running backs.

Everyone is criticizing OP for bringing this up after "one game". But Hilliard had a big drop-off last season from the season before. That's what the OP's getting at, I think. And it's a good question.

I don't think that's the point he is trying to make. He regressed tremendously last year.
He was hurt all last year. All of our backs perform differently depending on the defense. Frank always goes with the hot hand, and it's foolish to think Hilliard won't have at least one monster game this year.

Dude was too heavy last year, and under Miles running backs very seldom have back to back great years. I think this year it will be Blue/ McGee not Hill.

He looked way more explosive as a freshman
he had 2 of top 3 longest runs on the team last year. 71 yards, and 60 yards

he averaged 5.7 YPC last year. That was more than any RB except Blue, who only had 40 carries.

IMO he has lost that first quick step he had.
Posted on 9/2/13 at 12:59 pm to Lester Earl
and people fail to forget that when Hill bursted on the scene, it made him obsolete. Like most of the other RBS
First 6 games: 58 carries 382yards 6 TDs 6.5 YPC
Last 6 games after Hill emerged vs SC: 14 carries, 49 yards 0 TDs 3.5 YPC

Mr. Hilliard, while Kenny was good 2 years ago, he's been a disappointment last year and Saturday.

How anyone can make judgements on any of our RBs after 1 game amazes me.

Hilliard did own the state rushing record( still does I believe), AND he didn't have the luxury running behind a 5*, and soon to be NFL tackle La'el Collins like Hill did.
That's my point. Everyone said hill wouldn't be as good because he had Collins blocking for him and when he got in trouble because of that freshman people were saying they didn't want or need hill
Posted on 9/2/13 at 1:03 pm to CP3LSU25
Well Hill has certainly proven he's better than Hilliard.

he still looks too heavy imo....ever since Justin Vincent, we always seem to have a RB or 2 that plumps up
Posted on 9/2/13 at 1:15 pm to lsutiger333
imo he stopped having good runner vision. I don't know why or how that would happen. But it's pretty clear that where he used to slide through the holes and drop the hammer on the linebackers and the secondary, he now just charges right into the line and is a lot less effective as a result. He needs to keep his head up and be more patient.
