Porter Ridge on Discovery. A show so insanely stupid that you can't stop watching once you see it. A fat guy who never wears a shirt and converted a school bus into a recreational vehicle and owns a junkyard, I think, another guy who is raising black bears and training them to hunt truffles in the woods and another guy who thinks he's Elvis... what's not to love

Breaking Bad.
Was only getting around 2 million viewers until this year, so this answer is semi-legit. I think the secret is out now. Lots of people got caught up on it because of word of mouth buzz.

where in the heck have you been. It's been awesome sine day 1... as for being a top of all time, I guess that all depends on you tv viewing history. If you are under 20 maybe but not for seasoned tv viewers I bet.
Yeah, I was pretty perplexed because it was right up my alley of what me and my friends like. Didn't hear high praise until my brother told me to check it out. Now I have all my friends playing catch up.
I was really referring to currently rather than all time.

Not sure these count since they are not actually ON tv.
They are huge hits in the UK where they DO air.
p.s/ - Waiting for the new Sherlock is just crazy painful. Could be years before Netflix gets them. I need BBC one up in here.

Sherlock
Not a kept secret in England. Not really even a kept secret in the states anymore. The ladies swoon over Cumberbatch, and he's turning into a big bill actor. A good Cumberbiatch knows he was in Sherlock. Not dissing the show though, season 2 was phenomenal.
But if we're going by those measures:
IT Crowd is a good british comedy.
For my money, it's "Raising Hope" and "Jeselnik Offensive" all day. I don't think how people realize how great (clever?) of a show Hope is unless they give it the time. It's hard to be THAT feel good, and somehow engage the audience/actually be funny.

I'll give another vote for regular show

Rectify on Sundance channel... first season was this spring and only 6 episodes, I believe...
Also Top of the Lake on Sundance Channel was outstanding, though that may have just been a mini-series... need to check

I've heard of Justified, but know absolutely nothing about it. Can someone give me a brief rundown, and maybe compare it to another show? Time/channel?
I need some new shows to get involved with.

I think New Girl is a secret to a lot of guys. I just assumed it was a chic show until I gave it a shot. Funny stuff.

It's about a U.S. Marshall with a buttload of swagger who is sent to his home in rural Kentucky. Deals with rural crime bosses and deals with his past. Makes lots of wise cracks and shoots lots of bad guys. Think 24 (Badass good guy and great shoot outs) meets Breaking Bad (Interesting bad guys and great story writing).
