Bill Barnwell talking Saints

Was listening to a podcast about the Bucs and Saints on Grantland, and Bill Barnwell, who is supposed to be some kind of NFL savant, said Saints fans should not be fans of Loomis because the Saints have missed on some draft picks lmao. It would take very little research to know that Loomis is the money guy, and maybe the best at that, but I'm supposed to believe this guy is some kind of genius?
Anyone who thinks Loomis isn't good at his job should not be writing about football like he is some kind of expert.

I'm curious as to how much Loomis is involved in the talent evaluation, and how much say he has in who we go after and how hard.
He has negotiated some terrible contracts, but I'd have to imagine the staff and ownership was telling him to do his best to retain these players. Harper and Smith come to mind. These are players that performed for the club, but the team really over-valued them. Harper's contract was especially a case of hyper sellers market. If you remember, there were very few legit starting options on the FA market for safeties that would fit into our system, and as they started to dwindle one by one, we were faced with either over paying for Harper or having a glaring hole at SS.

The guy who finds the talent is named Ryan Pace. Remember that name because he will be a GM pretty soon.

Didn't realize it was that big of a deal. So many rules. I just want to talk about sports.

What's the difference?

I think it's all Payton, with help from the scouting department of course. I think Payton has complete control over player personnel. It also makes sense as to why they've had more success finding offensive players than defensive players, since Payton is an offense guy.

He shitted on Harper and Ingram.

To think Loomis doesn't have significant impact on deciding the draft picks is a bit naive. And while his background isn't in talent evaluation he has been in the league around twenty or so years. I'm sure he's leaned some things in that time. You take the good with the bad and the Saints have been a bit weak when it comes to early round selections.

The truth is that Loomis has missed on a number of picks...especially in the first round.
Ingram, Ellis, Jenkins, PRob and Meachum are all players picked in the first round that didn't live up to the hype. I'm not putting Reggie Bush in this group, not because he exceeded expectations, due to the fact it was the consensus pick by everyone who knew football.
Jordan appears to be the real deal, but we'll know for sure this year. As for Vaccaro, who knows what we really have.
So, in 8 first round picks, we have one guy producing and one who looks the part. That ain't too good!

I dont really care about the first round picks not being too good. He had a hand in bringing a superbowl to New Orleans and has the team in contention almost every year. What he has done with the salary situation this year is unreal.

He didn't do anything that any other GM, who has an IQ above 70, wouldn't have done.
Secondly, he had a big hand in creating the cap mess that was on the table in the first place. Smith's second contract is the NFL's version of the A-Rod Effect.
