Well with black panther the being black part kinda matters. Now with blade I wouldnt see anything wrong with a white guy playing him.

Why does it matter if he fits the role? It's not pertinent to his character that he is white.
Of course not, because these when these characters are created they are not throwing the race of said characters into the audience's face. Batman,Superman,Spider-man aren't talking about how great it is to be white. When creating the characters, they made them white because they made them relatable to the audience, just as they made black characters important as the Civil Rights movement(and beyond) became important to the US.
To be fair, it's only pertinent to certain characters and those characters are black heroes. Panther,Lightning, etc.
Messing with source material is always a big move. Making one black for the sake of having buzz (i.e. "What a bold decision! the first black Batman,Bond") is short sighted.
How do you know he fits the role? The role hasn't been written yet(in the context of the movie-many takes on Wayne). Plenty of actors can fit the role, casting him because he big enough to play a superhero is fine. Casting him to play a role that will always be a white character is just Affirmative Action.
If you want him to play a bat-character-There is Bat-Wing-who's a badass. But Elba isn't right for the part, IMO. Additionally, when talking about playing James Bond
Elba said this:
quote:
It’s a rumor…I just don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.
LINK
Diversifying a comic character just for the sake of it is insulting to the audience-all races included.
Again, as in my last post-there are plenty of great black heroes in Marvel and DC. Giving those characters the spotlight is much better than changing white characters for the sake of diversity.

Why does this have to be the reason? Why cant it be because he is a great actor that would nail the part?

Right. I said exactly the same thing about changing a character like that just to do it. I dont think casting him as batman would be just to do it though. You say they haven't written the character yet but he's batman/Bruce Wayne so he will be dark, brooding, intelligent, sophisticated, etc. I personally think he would be good. I'm not saying hes the only or even the best choice, but I think he would do well as batman.

racist.j/k
but in all honesty what was intelligent or sophisticated about Bruce Wayne in Nolan's trilogy? Bale was little emo,anti-social, uncommunicative, aloof, and only slightly clever. Some of those represent Batman and Bale was great in the role, but Batman is not always written that way.

Why can't a great actor elevate a lesser known hero in a movie that propels the character into greater social consciousness?
you know, like what RDJ did for Iron Man? Elba could do that for Mister Terrific, GL John Stewart, Cyborg, Steel,Lighting, etc. (I am counting him out of the MCU, since he already has a role).

Cause I, and anyone who isn't a comic book nerd, doesn't care about any of those characters. I like batman, and I like Stringer. Would like to see him in the role.

when the one's case falls flat..they resort to responses like the one above.
what contradiction there. You like a brand label hero and character that's only relevant to people who actually watched The Wire. By an actor who built the role you so love.
If Elba is that great(and I think is), why not cast him role that he would own, not just redefine? Shoehorning him because you like him is a terrible case for changing one of an iconic character's defining physical traits (like it or not skin color is).
There has yet to be legitimate case for why casting these great actors into a great black hero role is a lesser option. Plenty of franchises start with little known about the character(Iron Man,Blade, etc.) by mass audiences. Making a character black is a lame arse Hollywood move.

My argument didn't fall flat just because you can't handle anything but a white bread batman.
I used String jokingly. I could have used Luther, the gatekeeper, or captain as well. Idris is great in everything.
Elba would fricking OWN batman. Some people not being able to see past stupid race bullshite isn't his fault.
ETA: I think batman must be white because he always has been is a super weak argument.

Tell me…if they were to re-boot Blade, and cast a white actor in the role of the character, how do you think people will react? The fact of the matter is…casting Idris Elba as Bruce Wayne/Batman would simply be seen as casting a black man in a traditionally white role for the purposes of buzz. I don't care if he's the greatest actor on earth, I'd rather have Orlando Bloom cast as Bruce Wayne than Idris Elba because Bruce Wayne is supposed to be white.

Batman has been around for about 80 years and he has always been white. Changing his race would be a huge change to his character and would shite on his long history.
Posted on 8/12/13 at 5:51 pm to Brosef Stalin
It wouldn't shite on anything. That's over dramatic. Bat,an would just be a black dude for 2-3 films, and then they would just be on to the next guy. People would still watch, the movies would still live or die based on qaulity.
And the Blade argument is weak too. No one knows that's a comic. It's only known as a movie, and if was recast as the rock, it would be no problem. I know the rock isn't white, but I just can't think of a muscle bound white action star that would be the lead in a tent post like that. Channing Tatum perhaps? I dunno, he seems soft.

I think a decent bit of people know blade is a comic. I wouldnt care if he was recast as a white guy, as long as he was good. Just like I don't think it would be bad to do Elba as batman. As I said I'm not even saying Elba is the best choice but he would be better than a bunch of people. Anyone who thinks bloom would be better is probably lying to themselves though.
I also don't think Elba absolutely needs to play a black character to redefine or own them or whatever.

No your argument fell flat because you flat out said "I just don't care(read know) anything about the other characters". That overtakes the case for Batman-you only know him through non comic form, which means at some point you were unfamiliar until you watched a cartoon or live action movie.
The Phish fan would prefer a brand label mainstream hero to burn through talented actors than giving a talented actor a great role that would define the character to mainstream audiences-and one he is better suited for.
quote:
white bread batman.
Batman has always been considered a lapsed episcopalian- read WASP,or catholic which is central to his parents characterics. So yeah, being white is central to his character. Since it took until 1979 for the Episcopal church to denounce the KKK(and 1991 to declare racism a sin), yeah it's safe to say Bruce Wayne in his late 30s probably isn't black. The Wayne were always considered early settlers of this country and inherently wealthy because of it.
quote:
Given the wealth of support for both major theories about Batman's religious background (Catholic and Episcopalian), it seems most likely that both are correct, and that Bruce Wayne's father (the source of Batman's surname, English heritage, wealth and social standing) was an Episcopalian, while his mother (the key source of Bruce's early religious upbringing and ingrained religious feelings) was a Catholic.
LINK
Besides all of this, great black actors should play great black superheroes-it's the best way for true diversity in comic movies. Lefty Liberal Hollywood is too stupid see this and are more concerned about a built in audience, but audiences find great movies-particularly if they are tied to a connected universe.

So we're just going to make batman black now? Why don't we just have Michael Cera play Shaft.
Posted on 8/12/13 at 6:42 pm to D011ahbi11
According to the retards on this board Elba should just play the whole justice league. Hell you would save a ton of money paying a B list actor.
Posted on 8/12/13 at 6:51 pm to RonBurgundy
Well shite I didn't think of the heritage part. Maybe he does need to be white not many black American settlers or wealthy black men at the beginning of the twentieth century so that is a fair point. I do think there are several on here, not you, who think he shouldn't be black just because, which is stupid. I do agree with you now though. Probably shouldnt be black because of heritage issues with the character.
Posted on 8/12/13 at 6:52 pm to D011ahbi11
And this is ridiculous. No one here is saying Donald Glover needs to be batman, which would be comparable to you saying cera should be shaft.

I know, I was obviously joking.
