Cable Free: ESPN Question

So my buddy has gone without cable for a while now, but with football season on the horizon, he is starting to get the itch....
He wants to know is there a way to pay for access to WatchESPN or ESPN3 or some sort of online access to watch ESPN via his home computer.
That way he just pays for internet access and not full blown cable.
can someone help me/him?
i figure based upon who he picks as his internet provider they may already have a contract with ESPN3. UVerse for example.

My understanding from talking to Uverse and Cox reps, was that without a cable subscription you can have access to ESPN3 but not Watch ESPN.

certain cable companies have a deal for free espn3 that come with your internet. I know cox communications did for me. Other than that i'd recommend getting an antennae for network games and plan to go to a bar or sports bar to watch espn games.
ETA: cancelled cable last year right before football season and never missed a televised game except being there in person.

i keep telling him he won't be missing much not seeing Baylor games, but he insists on finding out.
i'll tell him to call his cable provider in the area.

This is exactly right. He will not get WatchESPN, so will only be able to watch the shitty games that are regulated to ESPN3 (and not blacked out).

Or he can just borrow someone's log-in and watch it on his phone and/or go to a wifi hotspot.
I have friends that use my log-in sometimes, it's no biggy.

As long as you have Cox Internet you can use the Watch ESPN app from your phone (or even better on Apple TV now that they have the app)

Only if his Internet provider has a contract with them.
