No. It's a default choice they made for 'safety' reasons. You could tell by the hamfisted way they tried to sell it at the unveiling press conference.

Because nobody knows what the hell a Rougarou is including 95 percent of people in Louisiana. You probably don't know what it is either!

We could still play choppy style whenever we did anything, and it would open up the color scheme from brown... Not bad but it lacks the alliteration.

What would you think of the Seattle Sasquatch? Rougarou would be received the same. The Raptors want to change to the Huskies because their current mascot is a joke. Rougarou would have the same problems.

Just because I like Rougarou better than Pelicans doesn't mean it's a better name. Most people from Louisiana and no one in the rest of the world even knows what a Rougarou (or Loup Garou) is.

If the Raptors changed their names i would say give raptors to Utah (they have a lot of Dino fossils in Utah, would be relevant and local) we get jazz back. And Toronto is free to name their team something extremely Canadian like the maple leaves, canucks or canadiens.
