Don't plan on it and I'm sure there a few people that could attest to the way I usually line up with a shotgun but you never want to kill a little democrat in the next apartment over cause you were barely awake.
On second thought... Well nevermind

At close range (10' or so) bird shot will no spread very far and will be like a slug. Course this also means it will penetrate wall. So just soon go with buckshot of your choosing.
Yep, there is a good chance the shot is still in the wad at this point...

I'm using a 20 gauge.
I guess I could drop down to Buck number 4.

obligatory
But seriously, if you want to stop a bird, use birdshot. If you want to stop a bad guy, you are gonna have to go bigger. Over penetration will be an issue though as there is no perfect round for your scenario.
Might want to do some testing on some frangible buckshot if you can find it. Until then, my recommendation would be #4 buck.
For some laughs, check this stuff out LINK

The individual pellets don't care what gauge shotgun they were fired from.

I live in an apartment as well. I said to hell with it and got slugs.

Here's an interesting concept as of late (frangible shot slugs).
I haven't tried it personally, but may have merit in an apartment situation.

That's cool as hell.

Best article I've seen on HD shotgun ammo selection
AR15.com

The only shotgun ammunition that will consistently reach the FBI minimum of 12 inches penetration is buckshot or slugs.

No birdshot load will reach the required penetration to reach vital organs or the central nervous system. Birdshot makes shallow and gruesome wounds, but it has been shown to be a very poor Stopper.

There aew some really good videos on YouTube. I have concluded that #6 or even # 7 lead 2 3/4" 12 ga or #2 steel 3" 12 ga is sufficient at nl room distances is sufficient through clothing and reduces the chance of overpenetration injuries in adjacent rooms.
Buckshot will simply go through clothed person and wall behind them with enough energy to harm others. Certainly would be effective but collateral damage is concerning.

When I travel, I leave Mrs Cove the BPS, loaded with whatever I have left over from duck/goose season. I think I've got her fixed up with some 3" Hevi Shot in BBB right now. If she stays calm and hits like she usually does, I figure it will make him hold still. Fnny, because she is 4'12" tall and 100lbs soaking wet, but she can shoot that BPS as well as I can when she wants to.
If I had an HD shotgun, I would likely alternate 00 Buckshot and slugs.
