I've heard some people say they prefer Linux over windows so I was thinking about using it for the new computer I've been building. Anyone have any experience with it? Thanks

Not a whole lot of games available for it, but Gabe Newell is trying to change that.

I was about to purchase Windows 8, but then I saw how awful the ratings for it were on Amazon.

well, its free
and there are some games
but if your main goal is PC gaming
just get windows7 and save yourself the hassle.

I had a student discount so I figured I'd look into it.

W/o having used windows 8, from what I hear, you'd rather pay a couple bills for windows 7 then get windows 8 for free.

In all fairness the next windows update may bring back the start menu and all that which is where most complaints come from.

Most games are made for Windows first and then ported to MAC and maybe much later to Linux.
You can run Windows games through emulators or virtual machines. Most Linux users will use WINE to run Windows based games. But if your purpose is to game mostly, then Windows 7 as has been stated.
