This is awesome. I'm not IT but design solutions. Once you have a working knowledge it is easier to get what you want from the IT department because you are asking the right questions.
What is your profession? Still in school?
I started with an industrial construction company just because I knew VBA and SQL. It has taken me many places. Was a great foundation for me being a "software jockey". It is good to have those skills and knowledge no matter what field you venture into. It helped me bridge the gap between not being an engineer but supporting a project in every phase.
I'm much more interested in networking and security tech than anything else. It is deep, ever changing and useful. Homelabs are a must as a hobbiest/enthusiast.

If you are not buying used. SAMs oddly had the best prices.
