Hey guys I didn't want to start another thread cause I figured the trolling in this one would be not as bad. What do you guys think of computer science vs software engineering? I am thinking of going back to school. Also considering something like informations systems management.

Id say figure out what you want to do and let that dictate schooling. Alot of tech careers don't require a 4 year degree

How far can you go without a 4 year degree in tech? Good earning potential?

Depends on your talent at whatever job you are doing. I know a college drop out making 100k+ in networking.
Certs and experience can get you a long way

I think me and you have discussed this before but what would you advice someone do to get started? Keep in mind all tech experience I have is on my own like building a pc and what not, no formal training.

id say get your foot in a small computer shop doing repair and virus removal. Don't try geek squad or the like, waste of time. You might have to volunteer your time until you prove yourself

I got my job by looking for an internship for school and ended up full time employee by the end of the week.

I'll have to see what I can do with that. I can't exactly quit my job ya know

A +, n +, then transition to a help desk position would be possible. If you are making decent money now though you are almost certainly going to take a paycut
Posted on 5/11/13 at 9:00 pm to jcole4lsu
What kind of cut? I'm not ot rich

Entry level Help desk in dallas is probably $15/hr or a bit less
Posted on 5/11/13 at 9:22 pm to jcole4lsu
that's around where I am at now... Only difference is I get overtime right now which does make a big difference.

Oh then id say study for the a and n + exams and you should be able to make a pretty smooth transition.
It was much rougher transition for me lol

How hard are those? Just curious
Posted on 5/11/13 at 9:42 pm to Mr Gardoki
A + is just common pc hardware knowledge. N + you'll have to study for. Lots of 7 layer network model questions etc
Posted on 5/11/13 at 9:53 pm to jcole4lsu
I'll have to check it out, thanks for the help

Holy damn.. how high is the ceiling? That is a pretty low starting wage. In BR, with almost any BS you can start in the $20-$24hr range.
ETA:
What is the avg annual income for a network security specialist?
That seems to have taken off!

I need to figure out what all these different jobs do exactly and see what I want to do. There is so much better growth there
