Excellent point.
However, I tend to overlook minor, trifling details if the overall product is good.

ETA: I would, for example, advise anyone who thinks Star Trek 2009 is a "great" reboot - knock yourself out, enjoy the BSG - it is for you

This really chaps your a$$ that I'm not just mindlessly drinking the Kool-Aid, doesn't it? I didn't even say that. I'm saying that watching 20 minutes (or so - that is a wild a$$ guess - may have bee 8 - may have been 30 - it wasn't an entire episode - and it was say, Episode 4 or 5 of the first season - it was so very long ago) made me appreciate that I did not like the new series. Therefore, I don't have to then assume that the old series was necessarily "better", but I could eliminate all of the assertions I heard that it was "far superior" - and since I watched all of the old series (and parts of Galactica 1980, but that was godawful), and yet could not get through an entire episode of the new series.

Another good point - however, was he a fan of TOS, or not? I don't know if that was ever covered.
(And it is unlikely, because he made the crazy comment about how Spock getting the girl was so genius and original - Spock got the girl a lot, even in TOS.)

especially now since I see it was just a random episode you did this with.
I feel our posts are becoming attackish. I'm just trying to have a legit debate/conversation I have no ill feeling towards you

Nor I, you. Obviously I get this a lot because of my position on reboots/remakes generally, but these two products, specifically, seem to cause people to recoil. I have lain out, in several places, my issue with every disgusting frame of that terrible, terrible 2009 J.J. Abrams so-called Star Trek movie. Likewise, my hatred knows few bounds when it comes to the worse-than-awful Star Wars "prequels".
I have never attacked the new BSG. I think the idea had merit and many, many people sincerely enjoy it. I'm not one of them. My off-handed comment here, "I could have advised against that" triggered an avalanche of pro "new" BSG warriors to come here and feverishly attempt to defend their, no doubt supportable, positive opinion of the show.
I remain unconverted, unconvinced and unimpressed.

If you have the time you really should give it another shot. I tried watching the original and couldn't get through one episode so I tell you what. You watch the new one and I'll watch the old one. Then we can have this debate for real.

If you don't mind my asking, how old a person are you? Because I can see how this will turn out.
By way of background I was born in the late 60s. I'm not yet "old" but I can see "old" just up over the hill there. :rimshot:
Anyway, when I was a kid, Star Trek had just gone into syndication, and I tell you, as far as shows with a wide appeal to adults, kids, older, younger, it just created a new market for re-runs of hour long shows. 30-minute sitcoms were easy to program, but for an hour long show to get a precious spot (most places had 3 or 4 channels when I was a kid - in big cities you might get 6 or 8 - the network programming would duplicate but you might get different syndication packages for reruns).
The success of Star Trek, not during its first run, but on re-runs throughout the 70s in the last decade pre-cable, created a voracious demand for science fiction television (as did, to a certain degree 2001: A Space Odyssey, Space 1999, and syndication of BBC shows like Dr. Who).
All of that led to Star Wars, which then allowed shows like Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers (which I loved, remake though it was ) being on the air in the late 70s.
So, I was a kid when BSG 78 came out. You're never going to see or appreciate it as I did, because you're not 11. I'm not going to appreciate the new BSG because I'm already endeared to the old show.
Your grand bargain, although admirable, won't work because it can't work. The 70s show was "schlock", the new show is hip, it's dope, it's down, it's now, "gritty" and realistic. If that's what you want, that's what you'll like. I like shows like that, sometimes (again, I'm huge fan of The Shield), just not Star Trek or BSG.

I was born in the early eighties. I've never enjoyed any of the Star Treks, old or new. I love Star Wars though, older ones are better. I get what your saying though. And I'm glad you turned down the offer. I posted that w/o really thinking about the consequences and I really didn't want to have to watch the original.

What if they re-imagined that with Corey being from a broken home, physically, emotionally and sexually abused. Grows up - gets involved with a lot of drugs and violence, before, kind of, cleaning up, perhaps getting out of jail at 21 after a juvenile sentence, with kind of an ambiguous ending to it? But wait, what if it was just incredibly well-written and acted and got all sorts of awards?
That wouldn't make you wrong for not liking it, would it? It wouldn't make it wrong for people who didn't watch the original to like and enjoy it, but you might wonder how a fan of the original show like yourself could just love the hell out if it, huh?
I'm just saying that's how it is sometimes.

That's pretty much exactly what they did with Starbuck.

Let's try to end this on a note of agreement between us - you say you like Star Wars, right? You agree the original movies (as originally shown, not that crap they push today with Greedo shooting first, a fake Jabba moving around the Falcon, the stupid Vader "NOOOOOOO!!!!!!" and the ridiculous, inexplicable Hayden Christenson ghost) are far superior to the bland, soulless money grabs that were the prequels, right?
On that point alone, we could forge a great friendship.

You know what, I was fine with it for the new, fake HC Vader, because, now if it is on, I just make it a comedy in my mind and that's the punchline.
But he went back and tried to dub that for real Vader in the fake Return of the Jedi.
We could have had the meme with just fake Vader and I would have held no ill will (any more than I already have for those terrible, terrible prequels).
