There is a permit a farmer can apply for to do this

They need to put a few new birds on the unprotected list, although I'd start with cormorants. Those SOB's crapping on the cypress trees have killed so many of them, and all they do is eat three times their weight in fish per day and crap everywhere.

Yes and he can kill whatever the hell he wants. The LSU AG center does this and if you are a student that works for them they will let you kill everything

I thought you could get a permit to shoot birds off of your crop.
You can. US Fish and Wildlife can issue a depredation permit for you to take certain migratory birds if they are causing destruction to property. Takes time to make a case for one starting out though.

You think shooting them means more won't show up?
It works. We get herons, egrets, cormorants and pelicans on our catfish ponds and kill the shite out of them. We'll burn through cases of shells but after killing a few hundred they will eventually pass over our ponds for somewhere else that is easier feeding.

quote:Liberal propaganda...Those big white herons can eat 5lbs of crawfish a day. Multiply that by 100.
Might want to do a little research about issues affecting crawfish production...appearances can be deceiving.

exactly, when i was in school a buddy of mine whose dad has 100+ acres for crawfish said he hires people out a couple time a year to take care of this exact problem so he doesn't get in trouble..
i never get why he just did a couple times a year though.. you would think it would be a year round problem

The start of this year my field was covered with them.
After a few shooting parties there is less than 5 birds that stay there at any given time.
I did hear a female mallard for the first time ever this morning.
I have had many firsts this year in my pond.
1. First time I see a Pouldeau (sp) Coot.
2. First time I came up on 2 snakes having coitus.
3. First time I see a soft shell turtle.
4. First time I have mallards in the pond.
5. First time I see deer (2) in the pond.
6. First time the plug comes out of the boat and nearly sinks me. Did it twice.
7. First time I have the same airplane fly over my pond for several days. GW?
8. First time I see a mink in the pond.
Also found some kind of dam between my levees filled with thick grass, it was huge and have no idea what makes this.
