German Shepherd questions

Looking at a gsd puppy for a December and they are all hip guaranteed. But I have heard different things about what that means. I have heard they will pay for medical costs. Or they will replace the dog?
I am asking because if a guarentee means they replace the dog when its hip problems appear then its a useless guarantee. Im not going to trade a dog in I have formed a bond with because he has bad hips. I would rather them pay for the costs.
Can someone explain this to me?
Also if the hips are guaranteed what are the actual chances of hip problems?

I believe they give you the money back you spent on the dog.

And that is what breeders bank on, I'd say forget the hip dysplasia and worry more about allergies.. but it is a bitch in German Sheppards.. no pun intended

I have read some stuff saying that bone development, aka hip displaysia, is tied directly to the diet of the dog for the first 1.5yrs

Coot comes to your house for free if problems develop.

It depends on the breeder. They may do a refund, new dog, or surgery. That is a question for the actual breeder that is providing the guarantee.

I think displaysia is purely genetic. The guarantee I got with my dog was that at 18months I have her hips checked. If she had it, the breeder would pay for the test and give me a new pup or 1/2 my money back. I never bothered having her tested because she was not going to be bred.
It really won't matter unless you are going to breed the dog.

Does anyone know the % of chance the dog gets hip displacia if they are guaranteed? Or is it same chances as every dog

Well Im not breeding the dog. But I dont want one with bad hips that may cost me a small fortune down the line

Wrong, it is due to inbreading pure bread dogs.

I think it's all genetic. If the dam and sire are clear like 2 or 3 generations back, the pups will be good.
It has been a long time, 10years, since I have done the research about all of this. My dog had the guarantee, never had her tested, and never had a problem.
As someone stated earlier, I would worry more about allergies and such. My dog had food allergies and cost me $75 a month for food that would not make her hair fall out.

I had a white german shepherd. I got her from a breeder in Dallas. The breeder told me that they x-ray the puppies then guarantee the hips. My dog never had problems. She died of old age.
The breeder told me that if she developed hip problems I could "exchange her" for a comparable dog (puppy). Since some dogs do not show symtoms until later in life, this was basically a lifetime guarantee.
I couldn't imagine giving a 1 or 2 year old dog back though in exchange for a new puppy.
I would rather have sent her to camp Cootkilla.
Hip guarantees are a good thing. A responsible breeder will have them examined by a vet before they make that guarantee.
What kind of dog are you looking for? Lab if I remember?

From what I remember the x-rays cannot be reliably read until the dog is a year and a half old. I believe the breeders make the guarantee based on genetics.

One of my daughters Great Danes was guaranteed. 24 months before she could have it tested. Test came back +. This is a grand champ in show. Fine looking dog that is easy 165lbs. She got back 1/2 the money. She paid $2200 for him and now she can't bread him.

You could be right. I'm no expert breeder. I am just relaying my experience. For all I know that could have been a big load of crap.

So their diet has nothing to do with their bone growth?
