And not just Jordan, think about all the greats HOF'ers. Think about what the Celtics dynasty that won 11 rings would do. Think about the showtime Lakers, the Celtics from the 80's. Think what the Knicks and the Heat from the 90's would do. Dr. J would be a fricking stud in this league.

I think the NBA was stronger as a whole during Jordan's era.

The game is focused around offensive production. Back in the day, they actually played a much higher level of defense IMO.
This is simply not true. Physicality =/= defense. The defenses played today are far more intricate than they were in the 90s and 80s.
Defense ratings now are roughly the same, if not slightly lower, than they were in the late 90s, and they're significantly lower than they were in the 80s. Of course, the 80s weren't exactly known for their defense.

Tell that to the top tier teams.

probably not much with a 6-9 center with no range and a bunch of short, skinny white guys

have 5 guys foul out of every game

i think they would have major issues with the superior defense and size of players today. that fast break all the time stuff wouldn't fly in today's NBA

True, you simply can't forget about to add Brandon Beal on a list of great NBA players!!!
I forgot, you're retarded.
carry on

The Pistons and the Rockets? Those are about the only teams that played good defense, and even then the defense they played wouldn't be anything compared to what the Pacers, Grizzlies or Bulls play today.
Why are people under the assumption that teams now don't play defense as well as other eras?

I believe his original list included a few more rookies too(like the legendary Andre Drummond), while dismissive of much better players from the earlier era.

it's glorifying the past. it happens in all walks of life. the thread about wilt calling out the 80s for not playing defense like they did in his day was awesome in this regard
it's like people who think the present is more dangerous/violent than when they grew up...and they grew up in teh 80s/90s (which was the most violent period in american history not during a war)

My list was
1. Only based on ONE year, not FIFTEEN years as in Jordan's list
2. Listed every player with AT LEAST better stats than Chris Mullin
If I list all the greats to play over the last 15 years and compare it to Jordan's list, Jordan would look like he played in the D-leagues

I think while more physical, defense was basically wayyyyyyyyyyy worse than it is now.
It is so much more complex nowadays.
I've said a couple of times the past few days on here, if you get a chance to catch an ESPN Classic of one of those Lakers-Celtics 80s Finals games, watch it. You will be, or should be, absolutely astonished by what you think defenses were then and what they actually were. They were woefully bad, no D at all.

Not really into trying to compare players from different eras, but consider that those teams of old, while not the pure athletes you see today, the level of competition was a lot stronger. As you had a significant number of fewer teams, i.e. roster spots were harder to come by, so those players were better as a whole. And defensive stats may mean a lot of things to different people, but I know very few players of today's era would drive the lane on those old Piston teams. Bill Russell may have been only 6'9" but he was the defensive player of all time for one reason: he was so much smarter than anyone else in the league when it came to playing defense.

Those guys would get blown out of the water by every NBA team in 2013 IMO.
If you're trying to keep it in line with the era, of course those Celtics teams were the best we've seen. There were 8 teams in the league and a different structure on obtaining players so the Celtics were able to just hoard all of the best players.

funny how every other sport in american history gets *better* over time with the advent of quality nutrition, exercise, etc...except basketball

i agree. it creates a variable when comparing eras, especially great teams from different eras
it's like how today's players are bigger/stronger/faster than in the old days and that variable

people just like to create an image of a sport when they're young, and create the halcyon view of that
if the sport advances, they don't like it b/c they want what they grew up watching
like college football with the variations of spread/spread options. the novelty and new strategy is hated by many
