I remember reading you need about 950ft/lbs(this may be way off I'm going on memory) of energy to kill a deer. Chuck Hawkins maybe. I can't find it now, work puters got everything blocked. Just need to do some research and make sure the round you use will deliver that at the distance you want to shoot.

900-1000 is what most people go by.

I knew a few people who hunted deer with a.357 mag when I lived in La. I've just never found handgun hunting to be that practical.

It's not really about being practical to hunt with a handgun. It's about the sport..."Giving everything a fair chance" Seriously,an 8 year old little girl can climb up in a carpeted, heated box stand with a .243 and kill a deer. Where's the sport in that? Maybe a lot of excitement for the kid and her daddy...good times and memories. All good stuff!! ~~ Take a hand gun, and stay on the ground, it's just another level of being a hunter. ~ Not for everyone I know.

.357 would probably be sufficient for moose in urban areas,
Exactly. That's what I should have specified when I said "lots of people up here use .357 with large hard cast". I meant in the city.
A city moose encounter is going to be less than 10 yards. At that range, a .357 hard cast is going right through their skull...and they have a big head that's hard to miss, even when charging.

yeah, you guys have the double whammy of bears and moose. I would much rather deal with bears than moose.
Weird watching those goofy f'kers walking around your streets.
