so, i've notice a BIG decrease in the number of deer i see on my home range in west feliciana and an increasing amount of hog activity. not too big of a deal since i prefer pork to venison (except backstraps and tenderloins). however, now the bastards have started rooting up the levee of my pond. war has now been declared!
anyone have experience with poisoning hogs?

Not poisoning but, running them off so the deer stand a better chance yes. Dogs work.

Lead poisoning works good.

We took care of them from a helicopter and it was awesome

Bait them. Time them with a camera. Set up solar lights. March 1 be there with friends and a lot of semi autos.
Mad minute their asses. They will move the frick on.

How many times does the cycle have to repeat itself for people to learn?:
1. Hogs
2. Pussyfooting about eradicating hogs
3. More hogs
4. More hogs
5. Hogs cannot be controlled.

BleedingPurple had a pretty good hog trap building how too on here a couple weeks ago. Trap them and kill them. One sow can birth about 12 pups a year if you dont do something quick they will ruin your land.

What area of the parish you in?
We haven't seen any sign at the house and just started seeing them on my MIL place. Unfortunatly I think they've finally made it everywhere here.
As far as getting rid of them, go after them hard. Put a ton of pressure on them and they will find somewhere else to go. Oh and don't bait if possible. As long as there is bait they will keep coming around.

Louisiana had ignored the problem for too damn long. It's over. You'll never eradicate them, not there was ever a chance really. When most people have a hard enough time finding time to deer hunt, keeping hogs under control is a full time job. At the best all you can hope for is to break even.

If you have them, bait or not, they aren't going anywhere. They are almost migratory the way they move with food sources and water. They are, at least, predictable with their movement.

We've been able to put pressure on them in some places and they would disappear for a while. You're correct on the fact that you can't rid your place of them for good but you can make it as unappealing as possible for them
ETA: I've heard LDWF has a disease that thay could release into the population that would kill a good portion of them but they won't do it. Not sure how much truth there is to that.

Can't really blame Louisiana for it. It was over when Desoto let some escape.

A lot of hog hunters introduced them to their clubs when they could no longer hunt them with dogs on public land and leased land. That coupled with open range land that was previously regulated by people that kept hogs for a living when those hogs can no longer be kept in check due to the current land leasing system=hog explosion. Louisiana has been reluctant to release the hog eradication for fear of idiots killing deer.
We are just now seeing the repercussions of shite that happened years ago. There is nothing left to keep them in check and the old methods will no longer work. And yes, they are in direct competition with our deer for food sources. You couple that with the fact that are hardwoods are getting fewer and fewer......you get the picture.

you want to get em off your place, put dogs on em. They'll leave for a little while, but they'll be back. No one wants dogs put on em because they want to deer hunt. Passive trapping and shooting on site simply does not work.

This isn't a new thing. It has been happening for years. Maybe other areas are just now getting hogs, but they have been around for decades, if not centuries.

Just to be clear, I wish every one of them were dead.
