Why did it take so long to invent the sandwich?

To me it just seems like it should have been among the very first dishes ever made. Doesn't seem like its rocket science to put meat and vegetables between two pieces of bread. Seems like it would be a good way to feed an ancient army. Surely the sandwich is much older than around 300-400 years ago. Anyone know more of the history of the sandwich?

Back in the day there were no plates or many eating utensils to speak of in fact, knives were about it . The "plate" was a piece of bread itself which absorbed the debris of the meal and was consumed.

The name is what took so long to invent.
The concept has been around since the B.C. days.
